A man shot and killed his wife’s two children—a 7-month-old baby and a 7-year-old boy—and the older child’s father, Dustin Willey, 29, before turning the gun on himself last week in Ohio.

Domestic violence murder-suicides occur more than once a day in the US. Easy access to guns fuels this crisis.

Whenever I approach a conversation with curiosity instead of judgement, I find that everyone can agree on this: Our kids shouldn't live in fear of getting shot and killed.

When we start there, we grow our movement.

On this day three years ago, an employee of the Walmart Supercenter in Chesapeake, Virginia opened fire on a group of co-workers with a Taurus 9mm pistol and high-capacity magazines he had just purchased. Six people were killed and six more were wounded.

Thirteen years ago, Jordan Davis, 17, was shot and killed by a white man because he and his friends were playing “loud music” at a Florida gas station. After his death, Jordan’s mother, @mcbath.house.gov, dedicated her life to #EndGunViolence, becoming a national leader with Moms Demand Action.

Jordan’s memory lives on through my good friend, @mcbath.house.gov, who is a tireless advocate for ending gun violence. I hold her, Jordan’s friends, and loved ones in my heart today as they mourn another year without him. Jordan deserved better. Tamir deserved better. We deserve better. 🧡

Jordan Davis should be here today. We will never know the dreams he would have accomplished because his life was senselessly stolen for playing “loud music” at a Florida gas station in 2012.

Transgender and gender-expansive people are 2.5 times more likely to be victims of violence than cisgender people, and nearly three in four homicides of transgender people are committed with a gun. Why? Because of weak gun safety laws, combined with hate.
