Trump and House GOP shut down the government.

Yesterday, every Democrat showed up to keep the government open. The Republicans side of the House chamber was empty.

During Trump’s 2018 government shutdown, 420,000 federal workers were forced to work without pay.

I cosponsored @alsobrooks.senate.gov & @elfreth.house.gov’s Help FEDS Act to ensure that during a shutdown, these workers can apply for unemployment insurance to help stay afloat.

I’m back in DC fighting to keep the government open. Today, Democrats tried to introduce an alternative budget, but House Republicans blocked it.

Federal workers are not political pawns.

Trump’s mass firing plan would make a shutdown permanent, taking away livelihoods and harming critical services. I’m introducing the SAFE Act to safeguard federal employees during shutdowns and ensure back pay if they’re fired unlawfully.

A shutdown should never mean mass layoffs. Yet Trump is threatening to mass fire federal workers, treating them like political pawns. That’s why I’m introducing the SAFE Act to block these attacks and protect workers during shutdowns.

I answered: he can’t. Congress controls the purse. By withholding these funds, Trump is defying the Constitution—and we’re fighting back in Congress, the courts & the community.
