This is nonsense to cover for the fact that a lot of police departments dont like speed cameras and automated enforcement tech (except plate readers) in general because (A) they get ticketed breaking the law and (B) they see it as a threat to police jobs.

How Trump Weaponized the Department of Transportation
The policies that govern how we get from place to place are usually immune to partisanship. This administration is using them to advance Trumpβs authoritarian agenda.
Why is the Dept of Transportation trying to torpedo NYC congestion pricing? Why - in Godβs name - is Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy on TV smearing the Minnesotans killed by ICE? For @newrepublic.com, I show Trump has turned USDOT into an authoritarian weapon. newrepublic.com/article/2051...

The 2nd Trump admin hasnβt awarded a full funding grant agreement to a single major transit project during its first year.
At the same time, it has attempted to pause or kill funding for existing projects in NYC & Chicago. Thereβs no upside here.

What a Public Transit βMoonshotβ Would Cost the U.S.
A new report outlines what it would cost to bring world-class transit to Americaβs urbanized areas.
"Currently, U.S. governments are projected to spend $6.3 trillion on highways over the next 20 years β substantially more than it would cost to build world-class transit, according to the report."

Going from a $1 fare to free fare makes transit more accessible for some folks, absolutely
But this also doesn't address the other side of the equation. 30-40 minute headways on many routes - which is not uncommon here - limits access and is a big time/money penalty for those that rely on transit

Why are such dire transit service cuts happening in Portland? Lack of leadership. The state transportation package is now stalled as it goes to the voters, and in any case its transit funding was only for 2 years. The region or the City of Portland may need to step up. 7/
