How do you suppose the NYPD interprets @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social leaving 1 Police Plaza to its current leader? As a reasonable gesture that shows he's someone the police can do business with? Or as a de Blasio-esque surrender that shows Mamdani is starting out afraid to challenge the NYPD?

Comic books routinely list 3 levels of editors. But in journalism, you have to know someone in the newsroom to know who edited a story, let alone who assigned it. That’s crazy, and it’s easily fixable. If journalism wants to fix it.

When you think about it, concealing the editors misrepresents (not in every case, but in a lot of if not most cases) who in fact is responsible for the story. And it puts the writer — most often lower down on the editorial totem pole — in the line of fire for something an editor is responsible for.

Yes; and I want to make a different point.

Editors *shouldn’t* be invisible. They should have bylines. YOU DESERVE to know who shapes the stories you read. Editors do that no less than writers/reporters do. Very often, they’re the ones who assigned the piece, not the writer, and who headlines it.

Keeping Jessica Tisch as NYPD commissioner is an unforced error for reasons concerning her specifically, the NYPD broadly, and the moment that we're in politically. An ICE collaborator cannot be trusted to protect New Yorkers. @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social should make her a different offer.
