After the events of season 4, Steve, Robin and Eddie get along so well it’s scary. It’s like Steve and Robin were missing Eddie in their lives. It’s normally the three of them, or a pair of the third. They were hardly inseparable.

And, well, Nancy was there.

After Jonathan moved to California,

Steddie dads take forever to agree to a name for their child.

Not for the lack of ideas, but because former mean girl Steve Harrington is quick to shutdown names that could easily be turned into an insult

"Start trying," buck croaks like a bad echo.

"Just something to keep in mind."

"Obviosuly, man. But I'm not- i want to start a family with someone special."

Something about that pushes him over. "Most people in our situation-"

"-our situation?"

"-With a teenager already in the house-

"-Our teenager?"

"-wait until theyre at college to start trying for another."

He huffs and makes a face, but to confront what's actually making him upset would be a step too far.

But Buck picks up on it. "What, dude, it's not mine!"

"Itd be fine if it was," said in a voice that says the opposite.

And i know already that steve is gonna take his lumps from Dustin w 0 real complaining for whatever reason the show decides that is unlikely to have any real satisfactory pay off. Not with the new characters in the promo shots and the sheer volume of shit thats gonna have to be covered

I dont remember who wrote it but there was a fantastic fic from this s4 where steve stops talking to Dustin because of the stupid comments. It has this scene with Erica where she both puts him in his place and reminds everyone that she is also just a child w less exp whos feelings can get hurt

Based on all the promo material it already feels like were going to use grief as an excuse for making Dustin the most asshole-ish version of himself (god I hope im wrong)

And so i look forward to the fanfic writers who are gonna come back in and offer some depth and consequences that the show wont

Post-UD it clicks that Otis filched it off a body and wasnt going to tell a kid that.

That anything he owns has been deemed fancy rich shit. Nevermind that he isnt anymore. But it seems to mean that he can't be upset when something of his is gone

He keeps that lighter somewhere else now

After Steve had done his own fighting he realized found hadnt meant bought. After the Russians steve carried in his pocket for a month before he got too scared that he would lose it. And back it went on his nightstand.

Its not that it was missing (amd eventually found) its that hes supposed to just

And yeah maybe he'd been a bit of a fire bug as a kid, robins not the only one. But it had been just as much about the stories he'd listen to at his Grandpa's house. Sat at his feet while he smoked that cigar.

The lighter he'd "found" during his time in Germany during the war.

And its not /just/ a lighter. Thats what sets it off.

It was his.

A gift from his Grandpa Otis right before he died. The lighter he would light Steve's sparklers with on the 4th of July. That he'd spark and close over and over for Steve before he finally lit his after dinner cigar.

Hell, Eddie could have thrown that one off the quarry and he wouldn't have gave a shit. He carried it around because it was expected, his dad had made such a show of giving it to him on his birthday dinner.

But no, Eddie lost the small mother of pearl lighter he always keeps on his bedside table.

Steddie first fight but it's over a lighter.

Not just any lighter. Steve could give a shit if the blue bic that he got at the gas station, with the pack of menthols he's hiding from robin, went missing.

Its not even the gold plated one, engraved with his name, that his dad gave him on his 16th.

Steve shrugs. "I love you so much, but its robin. Weve never been apart that long."

He can't believe steve is even saying that. "I always miss you."

"Cute." He still feels like a teenager when steve grabs his face in his hands.

And just like then robin ruins it. "Gag."

"Weve got five dates in the midwest you could fly back and see robin."

"So you really aren't going on tour with us?"

"Don't pout, he was mine first. Have one of your gross sex, drugs, and rocknroll tours. Trash a hotel room, forget how the shower on your tour bus works."

"He's my husband."

"Ed, come on. You have five stops in the midwest you'll barely miss me."

Robin snorts, "Yeah that one."

"Shut up."

"Make me, dingus. And its like all the new Met.allica albums or no its giving panic at the d.isco after they stopped being good. A little sell-outy from you munson. Expected better."

"See," steve says, "there you go."

"What we think when we're soothing his ego or what we actually think?" Robin's voice sounds like it's coming from their bedroom. Eddie thought he would have noticed she was there.

"What /you/ actually think of it." Steve places a hand on his arm. "You know i love that one you wrote for me."

"No they arent. Anyway shes here just ask her."

"Why is robin in our house?"

Steve squints like he really can't tell that eddie is serious. "Its Wednesday? Bobbin, come downstairs, tell eddie what you think of their last album."

Steve shrugs, "She just said she doesnt like it."

"Is this one of those times where /you/ didnt like something and youre blaming robin so no one's feelings get hurt."

"1. I dont do that. And 2. We have the same brain so we think the same."
