03.08.2025 08:03 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Which picture do you think shows the THINNEST yarn? Picture 1, 2, or 3?
There's a consensus that heavy whorls make thick yarn only. As a craftsperson, I'm very skeptical. My spinning project Spindling for Weaving aims to resolve that question and foreground the skill and expertise of the spinner.
It's pretty interesting so far, but far from finished!

30.07.2025 18:36 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'll be making some new blog posts about this, and a video showing the spindles in action. Be sure to subscribe and get notified! The next video will be coming out in a week or so, and will be another fleece related video!
30.07.2025 18:36 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0I've completed my first round of experiments! For those who attended the #festivalofarchaeology at the @coriniummuseum you got a cheeky sneak peek at my results so far. I'll be making a poll soon on Instagram and YouTube, so everyone will have a chance to participate in my research.

I'm going to be at the Corinium Museum today! I'll be talking about my experiment, Spindling for Weaving:

Come by and check it out! I'll be making updates to social media soon. :)

Whoever said you need to use undyed wool for testing replica spindle whorls? Also, air dry clay is great to use if you're inspired by my project.
It's a good balance between price and results!
Now, to do some spinning π₯΄

Yeah, I agree, all shipping rates have gone up so much in the last few years. I have absorbed some of the costs when I ship my packages (I think I charge Β£3.20 but it's more like Β£3.85 plus my package costs) to keep them attractive. It's difficult to get balance!

13.06.2025 11:21 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Here's a cheeky sneak peek of a current project I'm doing, using replicas I've made from the Danebury assemblage.
Dry, my little beauties!
A small fragment of prehistoric pottery, reworked into a perforated disc, is held between the thumb and forefinger of an archaeologist with a ploughed field, hedge, sky and metal cabin in the background
Jenny's found a sherd of Iron Age pottery, reworked and repurposed as a spindlewhorl (a disc fitted to the end of a spindle to help maintain the spin whilst twiting fibre into thread)
A gorgeous small find which really connects you to the prehistoric past π

How lovely! We only have one such repurposed from Danebury, but not as nice as this one. ππ

Republicans can't rewrite the reality that a disparity exists between medical access and knowledge and ethnic and social background. Anthropology is an excellent pre-med degree for a reason.
This is little spoken about, but it needs to be said. Disgusting.

So, yeah, the sett of my linen towel project is less than ideal, but that's fine because I learned something! I didn't get weighed down by my obsessive planning need, yet I still learned the lesson. I feel more creative now. βΊοΈ

π π π Uh, it's... going. The sett isn't right, but I'm only 2 inches into the weaving so far. My only weaving experience with linen is with the warp weighted loom, so while I knew that tension would be an issue, I wasn't totally prepared for how odd the workflow would be.
27.05.2025 21:19 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'm nervously setting up a linen warp on a rigid heddle loom and suddenly wondering if it'll turn out like I think it might π€ π

A woad plant: tall, green stalks with pointed leaves and small yellow flowers.
This is a woad plant, used in Bronze Age Anatolia and the Levant to produce blue-coloured dye by fermenting the leaves.
Cuneiform texts indicate blue fabric was worn by elites, and remains of blue textiles have been found in royal tombs #TextileTuesday πΊ
