In a country as wealthy as ours no child or their family should be going without the essentials. No Government wishing to reduce school absence can ignore the role that poverty plays in driving it www.centreforyounglives.org.uk/news-centre/...
A welcome development, but I'd be really grateful if everyone could stop announcing stuff and publishing reports as I have to keep updating a report I've just written!

Our response to the PM's announcement today. Direction of travel is sensible, but a government that is this early on and with a sizeable majority can and needs to be bold. All eyes on the SR and Child Poverty Strategy next year.
05.12.2024 14:07 β π 1 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Keir is right to point out the issues with school readiness, but what he didn't highlight was that, for children eligible for Free School Meals, the proportion achieving a good level of development is barely over *50%*. And the gap between poorer kids and their peers is on the rise...
05.12.2024 13:46 β π 2 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0When a measure becomes a target it ceases to be a good measure.
The PM's inclusion of #earlyyears in today's milestones is welcome, but the fact is the pressure to increase EYFS profile results will fall on schools, who do the assessment. And teacher asst is more sensitive to outside pressures.

It's great to hear early years being discussed on the news, but I wish they'd stop referring to EYFSP stats as showing how many children are 'ready for school'. They've already been at school for a year!
01.12.2024 21:10 β π 2 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0We need to talk about #foodpoverty in the #earlyyears - under-fives are more likely to face food poverty which is damaging for early development - see our new report on this important but neglected topic
