James made a 20% down payment on the home -- the same as she would need to make for an investment property -- rather than the 10% typically required for a second home loan, according to sources familiar with the case. A loan officer who worked with James told investigators that the interest rate for a second home compared to an investment property at the time of James's purchase would have been between 0.25% and 0.50% lower, a difference that would have amounted to $15 to $30 less in a monthly mortgage payment, or as much as $10,800 less over the life of the 30-year loan, according to sources familiar with what the loan officer told investigators. In the indictment, Halligan alleged that James avoided a 0.815% higher interest rate, potentially saving James $17,837 over the life of the loan.
In a sense this makes it even stupider. First, bc Halligan inflated how much benefit James would have obtained, by $7K.
But also, if James is paying for the house AND ALSO for a hotel, that financial benefit disappears.
Witnesses told prosecutors that James repeatedly informed realtors and loan officers that the home would be for her niece, but that she would occasionally stay there when visiting her family in Virginia, the sources said. James' niece told investigators that James visited their home multiple times a year but had not stayed overnight. Prosecutors argued that because James actually overnighted at hotels when visiting family -- rather than staying at the home -- she could not be considered to be an "occupant" to justify that the home was a second property.
ABC has a long piece abt why Elizabeth Yusi said they could not charge Tish James as Lindsey Halligan did anyway.
The only thing that deviates from NYT story that Halligan stalked @annabower.bsky.social about is that James DIDN'T stay in the home while visiting.

Food banks were already struggling to keep with demand. Then, Trump slashed $1 billion from crucial USDA programs supporting them.
Now, thanks to his shutdown, millions of Americans in at least 25 states will lose access to food stamps on November 1st.
The perfect storm of cruelty.
USA is FUBAR.
And the world not only laughs at the shenanigans that passes as a plan for quasi stability but is concerned about the consequences of a mentally disturbed narcissist with unchecked power.

Coincidence? Amazon fired hundreds, at least, from their cloud computing and units, replacing them with AI.
Fast forward a few months and a relative straight forward DNS issue took down much of the Internet.
In a nod to irony, the outage also took down ChatGPT.

Enough is enough. Adelita Grijalva was elected on September 23. The people of Arizona have a right to be represented in Congress.
Β
During todayβs pro forma session, when the House is called to order I will seek unanimous consent to insist upon the swearing-in of Adelita Grijalva.
The case is one of at least two major gun disputes the Supreme Court is set to decide this term.
