My idea of the whole question of whether white writers should write non-white people: I believe in death of the author. Once I put art out into the world, it doesn't belong to me and it's not for me. It's for all the not-me's in the world, so why would I create barriers for my readership by never depicting them? And if I manage to get the thing published and it's made into a film or people write fanfic, well there's a bunch of opportunities for WOC that wouldn't have been there if I restricted myself to writing white leads. If white writers, who have so much privilege that we are routinely getting published, only write white WLW, then that will crowd the market and drown out POC WLW. The outcome is racist so I just can't see how only writing white protagonists isn't the actually more racist choice.

I don't think white authors should never write characters of color, but I don't think they're 'using their privilege' to give voice to the voiceless tbh. What opportunities are they graciously granting POC who might be writing... fanfic?

I mean they're men living under patriarchy who are boosting patriarchal ideas about women and gender, so yeah, it's absolutely systemic.

They're men doing standard oppressive man things, just with far more familiarity with feminist language and a personal investment in transmisogyny.
