On a happier note, today I found a newspaper report from 1885, of 6 children being rescued from a cave on a beach at Ryhope where they had been playing. A coastguard risked his life and managed to rescue all 6.

Researching Irish migration to Britain mid 19th century for my dissertation. The variations in spellings in the documents for surnames is fascinating.
