Utility of prior cultures in predicting antibiotic resistance of bloodstream infections due to Gram-negative pathogens: a multicentre observational cohort study Appropriate empiric antibiotic therapy in patients with bloodstream infections due to Gram-negative pathogens can improve outcomes. We evaluated the utility of prior microbiologic results for guiding ...

The 'small five' streptoccoci: S.mutans, S.cristatus, S. gordonii, S. gallolyticus and S. sanguinis account for only 8% of streptoccocal bacteraemis, but ~ 40 % on streptococcal endocarditis

Our new study published. We were surprised to see that carriers have a high baseline risk that antibiotics don't add on it. Among non carriers BLBLI posed the highest risk. Overall the conclusion as always is- be judicious: use the shortest regimen and try to avoid unnecessary treatment

Less Haste, More Speed: Does delayed blood culture loading lead to adverse incubation time or yield? Blood culture remains a vital diagnostic tool in the acutely unwell patient. The UK Standards for Microbiology Investigations (SMI) stipulate pre-analytical requirements that are aimed at increasing y...

If you're interested in blood cultures:

Our study of time to laboratory on yield (adjusted for ward structure and baseline positivity) did not show a global adverse effect except for S pneumoniae, S pyogenes, and S dysgalactiae
