I’ve found a guy on YouTube called the backyard chef. Many simple, inexpensive but tasty recipes.

What am I doing with the extra hour a day I no longer use by commuting? Making sweet n sour pork with rice. Miss my garden though.

I went for a Prius wagon, waiting for a better, cheaper electric option. Very happy with it. I can get from Wellington to Deep South Canterbury for $60.

I find this Wellington summer to be totally unacceptable. Last week I was living in the South Island and enjoying 27 degree days.

Hamilton has needed a more aspirational but authentic slogan for a long time. How about, β€œHamilton - Safe as.”

Thanks, it’s been about 14 years since I’ve lived in the city (13 years in Kāpiti followed by a bit over a year in Banks Peninsular. It feels a bit crowded but I can commute to work by bike again.

That was my first idea but I found out the ships travel north- south, so it might have been a year-long circuit to get to Wellington. Now if I wanted to see Vladivostok that could be an option.

Visited my neglected garden today. Too much work, not enough courgette harvesting.

Had some spare time today.

Made poor man’s lentil curry and garlic naan from scratch. Cheap as chip, tastes great and will give me a few work lunches.

It was a bit beyond that I think. It takes a lot for me to give up on an item of clothing!

Once upon a time an evangelist healer told me I had one leg longer than the other and that if I believed, he would put the healing power of his hands upon me to sort it out.

Now if his angle had been that having a long leg could cause wear in a beloved sock, I might have given him more time.

Today I’m saying goodbye to a much used and loved pair of socks. Technically just one of the pair is at its absolute end - the other could go on.

Am I wrong to send the second sock to landfill? Could it have a life of its own beyond its mate? Should I start wearing odd socks as their twins expire?

A very quiet food court.

A very quiet food court.

Visited Johnsonville Mall to get some dinner ingredients from the One Stop Asian Supermarket. I didn’t realise that shop is outside on the main street. It was nice to be in a place with no queues, but also some of the shops were open but didn’t seem to have shop keepers. Flashbacks to early 90s.

When I was a youngster in Wellington, I’d see old men (maybe 36 or more) in Courtenay Place and towards Oriental Bay essentially living in bus shelters (along with their bottles).

The authorities reacted against that by making bus shelters that were inhospitable to everyone.

Sorry to say the potato fritter rated average. Good batter, slightly thick potato. I ordered two fritters (with a half scoop to go with dinner) and got two fritters.

Silverstream is still top of the table from the last four months.

Trying out a new potato fritter. It’s legal if you’ve ridden up the hill to get there eh?

Yes, they should make quantities of all the potato dishes - gratin, wedges, fries, cubes, mash etc. then buy a new freezer to store it all.

Record harvest sparks mass giveaway of free potatoes across Berlin From zoos to soup kitchens, people are hauling away tonnes of surplus spuds after the biggest crop in 25 years

Just wondering how many potato fritters I’d make for the year if I lived in Berlin. www.theguardian.com/world/2026/j...

Māori organisations really are the best at this. My partner drains our bank account to donate in some way whenever we’re visiting her tΕ«rangawaewae and I can’t find a reason to complain.

I had the same on Friday, driving from Christchurch to Picton in ferry traffic. The people with caravans and clapped out vans even used the slow lanes uphill to let others pass. Never seen the like before.

If I tried any of that with our princes, they’d simply eat whatever was on offer. They have excellent nostril powers and are on high alert for any food substance.
