Norwegian public health institute's name on one of it's outer walls.
Graph showing effect of introduction of vaccination against Haemophilus influenzae in Norway in 1992 on childhood disease (going down).
Great example of the effectiveness of vaccination. In 1992, Norway introduced vaccination against Haemophilus influenzae and the next year under seven disease burden dropped massively.
Yesterday at the Norwegian public health institute annual microbial genomics meeting.

Interesting. Can you replace 'oil' with 'salmon'? I have some concerns about the future of our adopted homeland.

View over a lake through the trees with a rising sun in the distance. It's autumn but we had the first frost of the season so it looks chilly. Golden brown colours.
First frost of the season and didn't really fancy doing my usual run. The views were worth it though.

'In space no one can hear you scream' says Alien. It seems that this also applies to Mastodon and BlueSky? Unlike the old Twitter, there is very little interaction with messages. Maybe it's better to write to (local) newspapers and/or contact MPs if you want to make a difference?

I agree, it's not what it set out to be. I'm no longer interested in paying 'open access' charges but plan to put manuscripts in open archives and publish old school, behind a paywall if the case. I cannot justify spending community money on a financial profit model for private enterprise.

Scientists paid large publishers over $1 billion in four years to have their studies published with ...
A study reveals that academic megajournals โScientific Reportsโ and โNature Communicationsโ have cornered the market
Explain this to the taxpayers and convince politicians about the obscenity that is the open access publishing business model:
"The scientific community of the US, China, UK, France, Netherlands, and Norway pays over $2 billion each year to a dozen publishers to publish their work with open access"

I think it is crucial we tell policy makers (ministers, politicians, heads of institutes, etc) and even librarians that open access has been hijacked by commercial parties pretending to offer open access. Let's all do BioRxiv and not spend taxpayer money on commercial open access charges!

PREDICTOM Secures โฌ21 Million Investment to Pioneer Early Alzheimer's Detection
In 2023, more than 7 million people are living with dementia in the European Union. This number is projected to double, reaching 14 million in 2050. This will create a huge burden on healthcare system...
Super excited after a 2-day kickoff event where 70 people from academia, industry, and the clinic set out on a journey to identify people at risk of Alzheimer's earlier.

Yes, I'm wondering if we put our papers on BioRxiv (or another freely available depository) but the published paper is behind a paywall if that violates funding rules? (I'm aware rules differ between funders/countries). This would satisfy genuine open access, right?
