Much SoR legislation has been around for a while. Persistently balanced literacy wonโ€™t work as a reason for much longer.

As of November, 2024, 40 states have adopted โ€œscience of readingโ€ legislation designed to raise student reading performance. However, 2024 4th grade NAEP reading scores went down compared to previous years. Maybe itโ€™s time to rethink the wisdom of mandating SoR curricula as โ€œtransformativeโ€

CLAVES can be used on its own or as a curricular supplement. It was designed with and for multilingual students and their teachers.

Core Knowledge Language Arts is a โ€œscience of readingโ€ curriculum whose lead editor is E.D. Hirsch. If your district adopts this curriculum while simultaneously talking about โ€œculturally sustaining pedagogyโ€, please ask whose culture is being sustained in the name of the โ€œscience of readingโ€.
