The Grasberg mine in West Papua is one of the world’s largest gold and copper mines. The environmental and human harms caused by the mine are jaw-dropping. Hundreds of thousands of tonnes of mining waste (called tailings) are dumped into the local Ajkwa river systems every single day. This devastates the ancestral lands and way of life of Indigenous communities, such as the Amungme and Kamoro peoples. Vital water sources are completely polluted with heavy metals and dangerous mining waste, causing huge health impacts to communities that rely on them as well as devastating the delicate aquatic ecosystem.

On World Rivers Day, we reflect on how critical river systems are for our planet, wildlife and communities, raise awareness of the threats they face, and aim to inspire action to protect them! Alongside @ldnminingnetwork.bsky.social today we want to spotlight the Ajkwa River, #WestPapua.

📣Communities around the world have mobilised to expose Glencore for fuelling genocide through its coal exports to Israel.

It also details abuses linked to Cerrejón & calls for a mandatory due diligence law & protections for environmental defenders.

Embedding and enforcing international human rights legislation in UK business practices is essential to prevent mining companies profiting from the destruction of ecosystems and Indigenous livelihoods and to hold them to account for their abuses.

Indigenous peoples, Afro-descendent peoples & local communities demand that companies fully respect their right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent over projects that could impact their land, territories and resources. This is too often treated as a tick box exercise, if it happens at all.

The authors highlight “the geopolitical scramble to shore up the supply of critical minerals” among “current trends that threaten our human rights and the environments we steward.”
