Hindsight by Mack Rogers pulses with raw lyricism, fearless introspection, and a deft fusion of personal and cultural history. At its core, the collection interrogates Blackness, queerness, memory, and inheritance through an intimate yet expansive lens. Rogers writes with a poet’s precision and a storyteller’s rhythm, crafting work that moves between moments of tenderness, rage, humor, and revelation. From the haunting presence of visual snow syndrome to the layered complexities of familial love, masculinity, and belonging, Hindsight is as unflinching as it is deeply human. Rogers builds a world where the glow of a computer screen, sifting through a mother’s scrapbook, or recalling a slur scrawled on a dorm door become charged with poetic weight and historical resonance. These poems live between memory and myth, between what is seen and felt. Rogers’ work blends formal innovation with sonic play, wielding language as a weapon and balm. Whether in the deft structure of a duplex or the staccato urgency of a list poem, each piece in Hindsight pulses with undeniable energy, a refusal to look away. This is poetry for those who seek work that is unapologetic in its truth-telling yet attuned to the beauty and pain of being alive. Hindsight is a necessary addition to the contemporary poetry landscape.

PRAISE FOR HINDSIGHT Mack Rogers' Hindsight is a glimpse into a word-world that pushes the boundaries and possibilities of form and the lyric. The speaker's movements through space/place/time, seemingly impaired by a neurological disorder called "visual snow," at first seem to go backwards, sifting through memories, both beautiful and painful, of growing up Black and queer—but only to reach toward a future of joy and freedom. Rogers writes "I am afraid of the dark because I am the dark," and yet "see[s] further than any person." At once pensive and whimsical, solemn and celebratory, Hindsight is a testament to the necessity of remaining curious and brave, taking in what the world can offer—even when at first it seems you cannot see. — Ina Cariño, 2022 Whiting Award winner and author of Feast (Alice James Books) Mack Rogers is a queer Black writer whose work appears in Foglifter, The Offing, Glass, Shenandoah, and elsewhere.
