The YMCA is an integral part of our communities, offering services that many families rely on. In a meeting with YMCA Ottawa and other YMCAs from around the province, we explored ways to support youth employment, invest in better infrastructure, and improve access to child care.

Doug Ford thinks teaching English, French, history, social studies, civics and phys-ed is a “ radical left-wing wacko” idea. It's no wonder our education system is underfunded.

The impact of the government's cuts to education are clear: 2 in 5 grade 9 students and half of grade 6 students are failing to meet the provincial standards in math. What more evidence does the government need? Our kids need supports, not more Conservatives with lucrative jobs.

Wonderful meeting with Jeff Maharaj and Jen Lundrum from the Ontario Principals’ Council. We had an important conversation about rising school violence and the challenges principals face with recruitment and retention.

Had a great chat with the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance on how the province can ensure the safety and well-being of students, including strengthening sexual violence policies and standards for student housing.

Sexual assault is one of the most pervasive forms of violence in Canada. I tabled a petition to Establish Consent Awareness Week to remind people the importance of respecting people's right to be safe and understand what consent means.

Lovely meeting Ottawa firefighters, Andre and Tim, from OPFFA. We discussed the need for a province-wide framework for firefighter health screening and a rollout of simultaneous notification across Ontario. Firefighters keep our communities safe, and I’ll keep working to ensure they are supported.

In Ottawa-West Nepean and across Ontario, tenants are being pushed out by bad-faith landlords and unfair rent hikes. That’s why the ONDP tabled a motion to repeal Bill 60 and reinstate real rent control. People deserve protection, not a government that sides with corporate landlords.

Friends and Advocates of Catholic Education were at Queen’s Park, and it was great to chat with them to talk about the impacts of Bill 33 and ways we can continue to strengthen and protect publicly-funded education and local governance to support all our students.

Many of Ontario’s ‘most vulnerable’ are not receiving proper care, ombudsman says Paul Dube blames two ministries — health and community and social services — for repeatedly dropping the ball following a 2016 investigation into the problem.

The Ford govt has failed adults with developmental disabilities despite years of warnings from families, frontline workers, and now the Ombudsman. There are over 53,000 people on the waitlist. This is unacceptable.

Ontario must invest in proper community care now.

Met with Algonquin College President Claude Brulé today at Queen’s Park as part of Colleges Ontario lobby day. Persistent underfunding from the Ford government has left forced colleges to cut programs and close campuses. I was glad to see Claude advocating for long-term, stable funding.

CPP and EI costs went up, but the government didn’t increase funding to match. School boards are now forced to spend over $100 million to cover that cost; money that could have been invested in EAs, mental health supports, and student well-being.

After appointing supervisors who are keeping parents in the dark, the Minister of Education is now hiding EQAO results from families and educators. Transparency and accountability aren’t optional: parents have a right to know how their children are doing.

It was great to meet up with teachers, education workers, and advocates this week at the OFL Convention and to talk about how we can defend public education and support students and workers. Our strength is in solidarity!

This government claims to be concerned about wasteful spending and bureaucracy, but at the same time they're forcing school boards to divert money meant for our kids into government advertising, while also requiring the minister's office to personally approve every single school name.
