For the first time, New Mexico’s downwinders have become eligible for government compensation. But many of them will suffer from Medicaid cuts, even as spending on nuclear weapons skyrockets. That now amounts to 84 percent of Los Alamos National Laboratory’s total annual costs.

One of my best friends from high school, who died last fall, had a tradition of putting up a "flower wall" in front of his house in Colorado Springs. (As you can tell, he was good with plants.) His kids and a local neighborhood association are keeping that tradition going. Here's what it looks like.

I spent some time walking around downtown Santa Fe today, which I hadn't done for a while. Here's a shot of just a few of the hundreds of hand-painted windows inside the La Fonda Hotel.

I just met this comfort dog, whose beat is most of the wards in St. Vincent's hospital, where a relative is currently in for a few days. Maizy. I'm told, not surprisingly, that she's extremely popular around here.

SNAP (Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests) has been very critical of the new pope for what it says as cover-up of sexual abuse by clergy. They sent a lengthy report about him to the Vatican on March 25. static1.squarespace.com/static/67f05...

It was really interesting, and often sad, since I worked there two times: during the 90s and again during "this century." It was cool to be flipping through magazines and then, whoomp, there it is: "Death of an Innocent." (The story that became the book "Into the Wild." To me the single greatest.)

I've spent the past two days sorting the Outside magazine archive that's bound for Utah State.
Many have asked: Was there really a cover in 1979 showing Margaux Hemingway looking like she's going to make out with a fish? Yes. Yes there was.
