01.12.2025 08:40 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0He sounds like one of those people who walks into any research/teaching support or finance office or stores and everybody in the room does that little "oh god here we go" face.
30.11.2025 17:16 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Yes, there is important information. There's inflection and mood and hesitation and volume and so many things. And some people who need subtitles actually understand multiple languages, when we're allowed to see what people are even saying! ๐ฎ

29.11.2025 13:38 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Shout out to @holidayinn.bsky.social who decided I need to lose ยฃ74 at Christmas because booking.com defaulted over and over again to December when I was trying to book and I clicked the wrong day but now they won't let me change the dates. Thanks a bunch you mean-spirited billionaires.

26.11.2025 08:21 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I started Duolingo Swedish because my understanding of Swedish was from crime drama and heavily biased towards words for things to do with murder and this is the opposite of solving that problem. On the other hand I'm concentrating on Italian now anyway and it appears perfume is always the answer ๐ฃ

20.11.2025 09:47 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I went to a conference at the Exam Schools in Oxford a few years ago. Shiny stone stairs, no handrails! There was a lift, and on the second day I even managed to find it. On the first day I waited for everybody else to finish then went really slowly, sometimes crawling. Good look.
20.11.2025 09:45 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0When he said - 20? years ago - that maybe women just weren't meant to do science, that's when he should have been made to step back from public life. He definitely should have been stopped from teaching then. It was the equivalent of a sign at the edge of a cliff saying "don't walk past this sign".
18.11.2025 15:31 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0A colleeague and friend during our PhDs used to call them "maths biscuits" and I suspect he got them whenever he needed to do a hard bit of programming. He later went on to do difficult programming for DESY so maybe it worked but I suspect he was just awesome.
17.11.2025 08:33 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0It is now but not so much when the people asked were at school. I'm 43 and I got like one lesson in little detail or depth.
17.11.2025 08:24 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Also during the 10,000 times we looked at literature by Jane Austen, George Eliot, etc. we didn't also learn that the mega-bucks people in the stories would have been rich from slavery so Mr Darcy and Mr Bingley were both fucking monsters.
17.11.2025 08:22 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Also I think the duration isn't covered - before I learned more I thought it was literally a few decades before abolition. Certainly we didn't learn that this started with the Tudors and was going on through all the king shit we were then taught.

15.11.2025 09:19 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0November 2023. Still in statutory period, if we can persuade men to fix what they didn't do right, but it's easier to just lean out of the window with a sealant gun and do it myself. Lizzie will hold my legs so I don't fall out.
14.11.2025 10:18 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0It's raining in our stupid house again but now we think we know why: our stupid builder failed to seal where the windows fit into the frames. So when it's finished raining in a couple of days I guess we have another thing to try fixing.
Why does **everybody** see two women and want to cheat us??
The microscopy facility are trying to figure out why the microscope breaks when the room is a liveable temperature, at least, so there is hopefully an end point. But I'm going to take a holdall with winter clothes and a hot water bottle for next time.
