Speaker Lindsay Hoyle has been caught on camera apparently laughing at his own constituents trying to question him over Israel. Right, so Lindsay Hoyle the Speaker of the House of Commons and a guy now as famous for being allegedly under the thumb of Keir Starmer, due to that now infamously sabotaged ceasefire vote as he is for being generally weak and not having the authority to maintain order in the Commons for very long. Well he's back on my radar once again for the worst of reasons once more, because not only are his pro Israel leanings well recorded, and arguably he's under more scrutiny for these, since his father, the late Doug Hoyle founded the Labour Friends of Israel Lobby, but following that botched ceasefire vote back in February, you kind of hoped he'd have a bit of self reflection in the meantime. Instead, when confronted by his own constituents about the ceasefire vote, he chose to ignore them, to film them and as he left in his car, he was photographed appearing to be actually laughing at them. That's not the actions of a guy who is contrite and self reflecting. Those are the actions of a man who thinks he's untouchable, so perhaps its time that Speakers of the House of Commons learned they are absolutely not. Right, so Lindsay Hoyle again it is and once again he's being taken to task over Israel, his own Israel leanings, his impartiality, his honesty and his credibility that has been questioned by ordinary people in his constituency this time around, the matter of that ceasefire vote back in February, brought by the SNP on an SNP Opposition Day once more seeing him being challenged for that in public. Just to cast your mind back to what exactly happened previously, which sets the tone for where we are now, some 3 months later, the SNP were bringing a ceasefire vote as an Opposition Day motion, they only get 3 of these Opposition Day debates versus Labour for example getting 17 of them, so to use one of their precious days to call for a ceasefire in Gaza was a big deal, but they got well and truly shafted. Rules you see. House of Commons Standing Orders are rules and Standing 31 relates to Opposition Day debates where, to give the relevant party its say on its day, the rule is according to the standing order, that their motion will be heard first in the event that the government lays down an amendment, and if the government lays down an amendment, no other opposition parties get to bring an amendment themselves, because by convention, their amendment would have to be heard before the motion. No good on an Opposition Day debate, because the relevant party, in this case the SNP, could see their motion amended before they even bring it. It's their day. Hence the need for exceptional rules on Opposition Days. This got set aside arbitrarily by Hoyle apparently after Keir Starmer leant on him, that is the allegation. THE SNP have accused the Westminster system of "failing the people of Gaza" after the Speaker denied the party an emergency debate on calls for an immediate ceasefire. Lindsay Hoyle rejected the party's application for a fresh debate on the issue on Monday afternoon, despite explicitly offering one after his decision to allow a Labour amendment during the SNP's opposition day debate meant there was no formal vote held on the SNP's motion. The Speaker's decision came after he met with UK Labour leader Keir Starmer, who reportedly pressed him to allow the amendment and stave off a rebellion on the Labour benches. Hoyle told MPs that one of the reasons he denied the request was the UK Government are set to make a statement on the Middle East on Tuesday. It comes after Starmer refused to say if he would work with the SNP on a fresh motion, following calls from SNP Westminster Stephen Flynn for opposition parties to work together. The SNP tabled a new motion for an emergency debate so the UK Parliament could vote for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Israel and push the UK Government to take "concrete steps" to help make a ceasefire happen. Following Hoyle's decision, a furious Flynn said: "Yet again, Westminster is failing the people of Gaza by blocking a vote on the urgent action the UK Government must take to help make an immediate ceasefire happen. For months, the UK parliament has blocked SNP calls for an immediate ceasefire - and now it's blocking a vote on the concrete actions the UK Government must pursue to make an immediate ceasefire more likely. "The UK is a key ally and defence trading partner of Israel and the United States, and a permanent member of the UN security council. It is not a powerless spectator - and Parliament has a moral duty to ensure the UK government is doing everything it can." The SNP MP added that around 30,000 Palestinians, including women and children, had been killed "while Westminster has dithered and delayed". If the debate in Westminster is to be anything other than meaningless, it's essential that warm words on an immediate ceasefire are backed up with concrete action - specific, practical tangible measures. "I urge Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer to work with us to ensure Parliament can mandate the UK government to pull every lever to help secure an immediate ceasefire, and lasting peace through a two state solution. "Finally, it's regrettable that this inexplicable decision will further erode trust in the Speaker. The Speaker broke the rules last week - and this week he has broken his word. How can MPs have any trust in the Speaker when he makes a public commitment one minute, only to rip it up the next. "If 30,000 dead Palestinians aren't worthy of an emergency debate - what is?" The National contributor Owen Jones said of Hoyle's block on a new debate: "Why did the Speaker - who Labour sources boasted they'd blackmailed - offer the SNP a new debate, and then suddenly not allow it? Lindsay Hoyle has not proven a popular Speaker with the public, but this week at PMQ's he arguably got worse. Since taking over as Speaker of the House of Commons Lindsay Hoyle has done a spectacular job, a truly fantastic performance day in and day out of showing us just how good John Bercow was and how much even we on the left miss the guy, because he did at least hold power to account with out favour to either side of the House. Hoyle is obsessed the little things and lets the bigger stuff slip. Calling Boris Johnson a liar for example is a bigger problem for him than Boris Johnson actually lying to parliament. If a politician lies, others should be able to call them such, especially if it is a topic of conversation happening in public. MP’s are there to represent us, if we’re frustrated by a liar lying in parliament, especially when it’s the Prime Minister, why should it not be raised at Prime Ministers Questions by our representatives? Why has it got to be via a motion for heaven’s sake? More pomp and time wasting. That isn’t effective, that’s frustrating. We all remember Dawn Butler getting thrown out over that, and it’s not the only example of Hoyle’s patheticness. Ian Blackford has also accused Johnson of being a liar and got ejected from the Commons. Boris Johnson’s dishonesty is well known, he’s built a career on it. He lies over figures all the time, it’s a full time job as a fact checker these days. 40 new hospitals, a lie, a billion pounds a month to delay Brexit, a lie, the £350m on the side of a damn bus, a massive flaming lie. NHS spending the highest ever – a lie, denied saying £60m to investigate child sex abuse was spaffing money up a wall, despite the fact he said it on radio – more lies, a visit to Whipps Cross hospital where he told an angry father there were no cameras here despite the exchange being filmed as he said it by the BBC. The guy lies more easily than he breathes and I could go on and on here, there will be a Johnson lie that springs to mind for everyone, but Hoyle? Forget it, he’ll defend Johnson’s honesty and eject anyone calling him what he is a liar. He’s also a racist and at PMQ’s this week we found out Hoyle won’t accept Islamophobia as coming up for debate either as Labour MP Imran Hussein tried to raise the issue concerning the Mark Spencer being made Leader of the House when under investigation for comments he made. Hoyle cut him off saying it was inappropriate to raise the subject in parliament. Ye God’s you utter balloon, where is it appropriate to raise it then – Is parliament not THE place to debate the issues affecting the UK? Should the Tories not answer why someone under investigation for a racist comment has received what can be easily viewed as promotion? You didn’t much like Caroline Lucas asking questions on Russian election interference either, leaving her to get heckled before stopping proceedings to indulge in misogyny and just to tell her to hurry up!
