Having tried out unity, godot, unreal, and all that, gamemaker was the most intuitive and simple one to use! I heavily recommend picking it up as a first game engine, the ui is great and the gml documentation is really nifty.

I think a true "Mascot Horror" game just has to manipulate aesthetics that're the opposite of horror and turn them into something that CAN be used for horror. The genre still has a lot of potential despite a lot of slop games missing the actual HORROR in their "Mascot HORROR" game.
