Biology is so cool!!!
I fully used to believe that "man flu" was simply due to patriarchy - that women sucked it up because they had to keep being moms/caregivers, while men were just being whiny
Then I personally experienced it myself after starting T. It's so real!!
π¨ Requesting help:
I am looking for an agent who can facilitate more speaking gigs, podcast appearances, and interviews with journalists
I want to more widely share my story and expertise as a trans geneticist who understands the reality and complexity of "biological sex" π³οΈββ§οΈπ§¬
Please signal boost?
I also welcome any direct connections people may have to podcasts who need a guest, or organizations who need a speaker (it's about that time to start planning for Trans Day of Visibility!)
If you have questions or ideas, DM me or email me at jey (at) beyondxandy (dot) org

Abortion access, gender affirming care, and access to Prep and AIDS medications are all issues of bodily autonomy and founded in legitimate medical research
But that doesn't matter to fascists. Enforcing strict gender binaries and destroying science maintains power among a few cishet wealthy men
This is why it's important to vocally fight for trans rights - it works!
Big win ππ³οΈββ§οΈ

1. Anti-trans news story lying about "trusting the science" that "biological sex" is binary
2. Scientific resources explaining the complexity of sex and gender
3. Good faith questions that could use a trans geneticist's brain

A London Underground advertisement for testosterone for men
Makes me feel insane to live in a world that's persecuting trans folk while simultaneously doing big billboards advertising gender affirming care to cis people???

Also the project and the tactics come from the USA.

In 2022 I started tracking changes in how news outlets were describing trans people, and set up a bot to record every article pushed to the Google News index based on a handful of search phrases, including βbiological sexβ in both the US and UK. The amount in 2023 alone was absolutely staggering.
16.01.2026 00:27 β π 1064 π 391 π¬ 7 π 12There are many terms to refer to a personβs sex: sex, birth sex, natal sex β and more contentiously, assigned sex at birth and biological sex.
Here's our expanded guidance for journalists interested in reporting accurately about trans and intersex people:

Scientists reject a binary view of human sex at NIH symposium
They say complexities of human sex require more inclusive definitions, and research data need to reflect biological complexity
chart header reads: Fields Under Fire. Some research fields have been heavily affected by grant terminations implemented by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) under President Donald Trump. More than half of the active, NIH-funded projects about gender and sexual minorities (LGBT+) have been cancelled. chart #1 shows that 50.6% of grants containing the terms "LGBT/LGBTQ/LGBTQ+" in the title or abstract were terminated. chart #2 shows that 45.8% of grants containing the term "transgender" in the title or abstract were terminated. chart #3 shows that 45.5% of grants containing the term "vaccine hesitancy" in the title or abstract were terminated. chart #4 shows that 3.4% of grants containing the terms "HIV" or "AIDS" in the title or abstract were terminated.
since it's behind a paywall now, I wanted to share this graph from "How Trump 2.0 is slashing NIH-backed research β in charts" (Nature, April 2025). Say it with me: the anti-trans/LGBTQ+ movement is an anti-science movement:

βPlato does not agree with the narrative that there are two biological sexes and that everyone should be heterosexual. So it is controversial. But that's the whole point of including him in the syllabus.β

Can't promise answers to every question or commentary on every piece of news
We're a volunteer team: Mainly one tired trans science communicator, helped by their queer scientist friends (also tired)
But we at least want to be a resource to stay up to date about science-related trans rights issues

𧡠Big News:
Today was my last day at work. I resigned to completely dedicate my time to trans activism as long as it's financial feasible
I'll be writing a book debunking anti-trans attacks that falsely claim to be founded in "biology" and making educational resources at @beyondxandy.bsky.social
No, *you* represent the viewpoint of most biologists
Every major medical and biology organization accepts that sex is not binary, transness is innate, and that gender affirming care is life saving, evidence based medicine
See a list of statements below: bsky.app/profile/beyo...
@rikiwilchins.bsky.social 2026 Jan 2 AP: HRC files EEOC complaint on behalf of 4 fed employees against Office of Personnel Management policy banning coverage of βchemical & surgical modification" of sex for all federal employees, saying it constitutes sex-based discrimination.

Mushroom evolutionary biologist here.
Weβre well aware of the fact that sex and gender isnβt a binary. Happy to talk about the fungus with 28,000 distinct sexual identities anytime.

βAll evolutionary biologists know that variation itself is lifeβs only irreducible essenceββGould
Evolutionary biology is the study of how complicated and diverse life can be; the field has its jerks, but a good evolutionary biologist learns pretty fast that life doesnβt like boundaries or binaries
I consider myself a biological anthropologist who sometimes has to engage with evolutionary biologists.
In EB, too often the conclusions are about how biology determines culture. In BA, we learn that culture & biology are interrelated, affecting each other but not determining (thatβs too narrow).
My training was very firmly in an evolution oriented EEB dept. As a visibly GNC queer, I have actually found EEB spaces to be a more welcoming home than neuroscience. Working on animal sexual behavior from an EEB perspective really highlights the sheer diversity of ways that sex can be organized.
22.12.2025 19:27 β π 67 π 10 π¬ 4 π 0Rather excellent thread
Letβs be very clear here. This is exactly why it was exceptionally unwise of the Supreme Court to wade into this space using βbiological sexβ as a defining concept, because as soon as you talk to actual biologists the simple binary unravels. Not a stable basis for law.
Ecologist here, we know plenty about the diversity of life, and as the @britishecologicalsociety.org we actively support the inclusion of trans people alongside all the many ways of simply being human. Dawkins does not represent or speak for us.
22.12.2025 20:11 β π 64 π 13 π¬ 3 π 0Actually see the opposite honestly been told time and time again that diversity in gene expression and behavior is an advantage in species not a take away. I donβt think you understand evolution and genetics enough if youβre transphobic and homophobic
