Virtually any performing art works best when there's a heavy degree of improv to it, and all improv depends entirely on strict rules that create a world of total freedom inside those rules. Part of the strictness is KNOWING THE SCRIPT. Not just memorization, but *knowing* it on top of that. /fin

The best pitchers, of course, know how to take the ideas in a graf and just run with them on their own. And you get a pair of REALLY good pitchers and they'll go full improv on you. That can get tricky, because you get lost in a conversation instead of staying on-message. But when it works...

Inexperienced pitchers literally read the script, word for word. The system allows for this. Doesn't sound great, but it's ok. Better pitchers mostly read the graf but realize it's HOW you read that makes a difference. Emphasis. Pauses. Repetition. All this is encouraged; a good producer guides you.

In public radio, good stations run their pledge drives with ~100 pages of scripts, broken down into 7 to 10 categories: case, match, close, open, gifts, legacy, sustainer, etc. Each page has 3-4 grafs. Producer tells the 2 pitchers which categories and in what order, the pitchers choose the graf.

I don't think it's you who's the crazy one in this scenario. Judging by all the artwork on display in this house, it's probably mostly painted by the owner and they are Making A Statement...and that statement is they're so rich that they DGAF.
