Infographic titled “How UK children are navigating the online world,” based on the Ofcom Children and Parents: Media Use and Attitudes Report 2025. Three statistics are shown inside a large smartphone illustration:
1. 37 percent of children aged 3 to 5 use social media, accompanied by an icon of two children.
2. 66 percent of children aged 3 to 17 watch livestream videos, represented by a play button icon labeled “LIVE.”
3. 50 percent of children aged 8 to 17 say they have used artificial intelligence (AI) tools, shown with an AI chip icon.
The background is pale green, with bold blue text and icons. A small 5Rights Foundation logo is in the top-right corner.
📢 The UK Gov confirmed safety by design as a strategic priority for #OnlineSafetyAct enforcement — a clear steer that the responsibility to keep children safe lies with tech companies.
But more must be done to deliver on the Online Safety Act’s promises 🔗 5rightsfoundation.com/uk-governmen...

Screenshot of the POLITICO Pro Morning Technology UK newsletter, authored by Joseph Bambridge with Tom Bristow. The headline "DRIVING THE DAY" introduces the key news item: the UK minister for online safety reaffirmed that the Online Safety Act is "not up for negotiation" in U.S. trade talks. Quotes from Maggie Jones and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle emphasise that the Prime Minister is "absolutely clear" on this point and that there is no pressure to water down implementation.
Great to see this commitment from the UK government 🇬🇧
Earlier this month we joined 20+ orgs urging the PM not to weaken the Online Safety Act in US trade talks.
Now, the govt must fully back Ofcom to robustly enforce these crucial protections for children🔗 5rightsfoundation.com/resource/joi...

🚨ICO is investigating TikTok, Reddit, and Imgur for suspected breaches of the UK Age Appropriate Design Code.
A positive step, but with data-intensive AI and high-risk processing now the norm, children need stronger protections.

Holes not fixed: UK regulator publishes final proposals for tackling illegal harm online
UK regulators must address gaps in digital regulations to protect children from online harm, ensuring coordinated action on EdTech and AI.
Ofcom's final code have gaps which may allow these services to exempt themselves from their duties. The purpose of B. Morgan's amend. categorising based on small or high risk services intended to bring services into scope of the regime's strongest duties.

Gov. minister Feryal Clark states at this morning's DL Committee that categorisation thresholds for the UK's #OnlineSafetyAct will fail to capture small but risky services, emphasising they will have to comply with relevant illegal and children's safety duties.

Our initial read of Ofcom's Illegal Harms Code is that gaps in Ofcom's approach remain.
We'll be studying the full detail over the coming weeks, but share the disappointment of many civil society groups at the lack of ambition with this Code.
