When you’re obsessed with film like I am you end up having thoughts like, “You know what? PETITE MAMAN and MY OLD ASS would actually make a great double feature.”

EEPHUS is such an autumnal film. I’m not just speaking of the time of year it takes place in. It feels like a wistful lamentation for a time that all of the characters realize is passing as they desperately try to grip it on its way out the door.

For the longest time, I put off seeing MELANCHOLIA. Watched it today and now I know I’ll never get it out of my head. A very on-point depiction of depression.

42 was the first performance that really brought Chadwick Boseman to my attention. It was a controlled performance that dared us to peel back the layers. Absolutely brilliant work telling an important story.

I found THE GIRL WITH THE NEEDLE haunting and upsetting but it also contains some of the most stunningly beautiful images I’ve seen in a 2024 film.

A REAL PAIN makes a compelling case that hurt across a people and across generations can lead to hurt on a personal level. It’s a beautiful statement about sadness on both a macro and micro scale.

One great thing about working on film festivals: I’ve seen two films this year that do not have distribution deals that are better or as good as any of the Best Picture nominees.

SAVING PRIVATE RYAN is probably best known for its stunning Omaha Beach sequence. But the scene that floored me is when Giovanni Ribisi’s character talks about pretending to be asleep when his mother would come home from work. The way he delivers the line “I don’t know why I did that” is piercing.

No film makes me laugh more than THIS IS SPINAL TAP. But decades from now will people even know the very specific genre bands that the film was poking fun at?
