I nod and give Elena her juice. “Stop bouncing and drink your juice.” I get Kieran coffee and hand it to him. “Here, lifeblood for you.”

Elena bounces happily. “You should. It’s pretty!”

I get Elena juice. “The girls decided it should go in Nella and Livvie’s room when they come home.”

She giggles and hugs him tightly. “Did you see the pretty cliff we painted with Aunty?”

I softly say, “She means the painting she and Jessie did with Mats. It’s probably still drying in the art studio.”

Elena runs into the room and I step away from Kieran as she launches herself at him. “Uncle! Uncle! You’re here!”

I nod. “That’s fair. Well, we’re happy to spend the day with you.”

I softly say, “She needs pestering. She did the same thing at Christmas with me and Elena. Spoiled us and got squirrelly about us giving her anything or doing anything for her.”

“I was just including you in the list, Daddy.”

I smack Kieran gently. “I appreciate you when you’re around, you lunatic. And you probably woke up alone because your girl is fucking skittish about holidays.”

I rub his back. “Okay. Wanna explain why you’re not with your girl on Valentine’s Day and instead are slumming with your twin and niece?” I pause. “And Dad?”

I make a face. “How did Matty make you better?” I shake my head. “We don’t have plans.”

I don’t answer since he called while I was in the shower, but when I get down to the kitchen, he’s there, so I kiss his cheek and Daddy’s. “You look healthy, brother.”

“She’s sleeping. There’s a difference.” I gently move his hand to Matty’s. “You have to let her know you’re here.” I kiss his head before moving away to sit in the other chair.

Tavish stands up. “We’ll go get coffee. Maybe she just hasn’t woken up because she doesn’t want to deal with us.” He leans down and kisses Matty’s cheek before whispering something in her ear, then he and Spence leave the room.

I gently squeeze Kieran’s shoulder. “Talk to her, brother.”

Tavish shakes his head. “No. Not except for very briefly this morning. But she hit her head when she fell or fainted, so the doctors say she’s gonna be tired. I mean…she just had a head injury and now she has another minor one.”

We slowly make our way to Matty’s room and find Spence and Tavish sitting on either side of her bed while Matty sleeps, the monitors beeping quietly.

Spence jumps up and moves out of the chair, so I help Kieran over to it.

“She hasn’t woken up yet?” I ask.+

I nod and gently rub his arm.

It doesn’t take us long to get to the hospital and I park before getting out of the car and opening his door

I close his door and get in the driver’s seat before pulling away from the garage and out of the driveway.

As I turn onto the street, I gently squeeze his hand. “You know, seeing her could have waited until she was home. You didn’t need to push yourself.”

We slowly make our way up the stairs and across the yard to the driveway.

When we eventually get there, I open the passenger side door of my car. “Careful, careful, or you’re gonna end up admitted right next to Mats.”

I nod and get his shoes, kneeling to put them on. “And also to trap you so you couldn’t run away from me.”

Once his shoes are on, I put mine on and grab my purse before helping him up.

I laugh. “I did it because you were panicking and no one is gonna think the injured guy is down all the damn stairs. Sit down. I’ll help you with your shoes.”

“Spence was going to call him once Mats was awake for more than the twenty seconds she was earlier.” I nod. “I can, but you remember the stairs between here and the main house and driveway, right? It’s gonna hurt.”

I sigh softly and move to him. “We think she fainted. Hit her head. Cadia’s cousins found her in her bathroom. The hospital decided to keep her, put her on IV nutrition since she’s not able to keep anything down. Spence and Tavish, the guys that found her, they’re with her.”

I softly say, “You can’t right now. She’s in the hospital.”

I shake my head. “You never need to apologize for that. Not to me.” I keep rubbing his back. “But you do need to rest.”

I hug him tightly, rubbing his back. “It’s okay. It’s okay. We’re safe here.”

I stand up from the couch and grab him. “You need to take it easy. You’re going to hurt yourself more.”

After I stock the kitchen, I curl up in the living room of the poolhouse. -maybe everyone else should go into hiding too, since Kieran is scared of something and we don't know what...it would be safer if everyone went to one of the family safe houses.-
