Iceland, the land of volcanoes and elves hides more than it seems. Our zoologists have discovered wetland snails which were spread by birds from Europe. Many species are cumulated in the warmest areas, which are under human pressure.

A DNA-based checklist of the stipitate hydnoids (<i>Bankeraceae</i> s.l.) of Czechia. A DNA-based checklist of the stipitate hydnoids (<i>Bankeraceae</i> s.l.) of Czechia.

The scientists confirmed the occurrence of 6 newly described species, 4 more previously unknown from Czechia and also discovered 2 putative new ones. The study provides more than just a list, it also looks at the ecology and variation of taxa across Europe.

Oblíbené budování tůní může krajině spíš škodit než pomáhat, míní experti | ČeskéNoviny.cz Praha - Oblíbené hloubení tůní jako opatření proti suchu může například v zemědělské nížinné krajině na jižní Moravě mnohdy napáchat víc škody než užitku. ČTK to řekli odborníci z Masarykovy univerzit...

Zakládání nových tůní nemusí vždy krajině prospět. Často dochází k ničení kvalitních mokřadních biotopů, ústupu jejich specializovaných druhů, zhoršování kvality vody a vysychání okolní krajiny.

The most interesting finds were small snail Euconulus fulvus and rare and endangered species Vertigo angustior. The Faroese land snail fauna is poor due to intensive sheep grazing. Richer communities survive only on steep rock faces that are difficult to access.

Temporal niche dynamics of spreading native invertebrates underlie doubling of richness in pristine temperate streams Expanding native species of river macroinvertebrates mainly retained their original niches, with little evidence of niche shifts over the last 25 years. This suggests that species richness in pristin....

Their results do not support the hypothesis that species-specific traits are behind species success, but rather the relaxation of competition and an increase in the carrying capacity of the environment. It will be interesting to follow the further development of this trend. doi.org/10.1111/1365...

They found doubling of species richness at the sites, which is mainly due to expansion of native species that haven’t changed their ecological requirements. This is not a return of species after recovery, but phenomenon associated with higher energy flow in ecosystem, probably due to climate change.
