Eat lampreys! We're delicious! Some dishes with lamprey: Lamproie à la bordelaise (France) Arroz de Lampreia (Portugal) Yatsume kabayaki (Japan) Lamp dog (my invention. lamprey in hotdog) Dried lamprey (Native American, multiple tribes) Canned fried lamprey Lamprey pie (England) Humans harvest and eat about seven species of lamprey. The mucus & serum are toxic, so must be washed before cooking. Elaborate lamprey pies are served at coronations in England. King Henry I was said to have died from eating a "surfeit of lampreys". Due to lack of scales, they're haram and non-kosher.

Some places with lampreys on their heraldry include: Nakkila & Eurajoki, Finland Pajares de la Lampreana & Villalba de la Lampreana, Spain Freguesia de Penacova, Portugal Sainte-Terre, France Carnikava, Latvia Also included is a list of 15 languages' word for lampreys. What lampreys do for us: Important to ecosystem, food source, fish bait, culturally importance, scientific research What we can do for lampreys: Fight their negative image, don't let invasive & non-invasive species be confused, support conservation of local species, get involved with your local tribe's conservation efforts (if applicable). If you live near Arbo (Spain), Willamette Falls (USA), Sainte-Terre (France), Carnikava (Latvia), or Narva-Jõesuu (Estonia), go to a lamprey festival! Kiss a lamprey...? (This one is being said by a lamprey)

While I was working on this zine, I was shown photos of a friend of a friend's mom's coworker's Halloween lamprey costume. More people should do this. Lampreys in video games include: Eelektrik from Pokemon, Rae from Astronautilus, lamprey from Shadow of the Erdtree. A comic about lampreys. Description of contents: I'm a jawless, cartilaginous fish who's existed since the Devonian. I comprise the order Petromyzontiformes, and I'm invasive in some places and a keystone in others. I'm not related to eels - my closest relative is the hagfish. My mouth might be scary, but I'm a fascinating animal with an unusual job, and I'm excited to make your acquaintance. (Anatomical diagram also included in this page)

An Umatilla creation story describes lamprey losing all his limbs while gambling with Coyote (originally Handgame, but depicted here as Yugioh.) Because of this incident, he has to live in the river and suck on rocks with his big mouth. (There's also a Nez Perce version where he gambles away all his bones.)

There are about 40 species of lamprey, here are details on a few: Sea lamprey: Found across the American Ocean, though invasive in the Great Lakes. Can grow up to 47" long. Pouched lamprey: Males have a gular pouch used to oxygenate and massage eggs. They also carry rocks in it. Pacific lamprey: Culturally and ecologically important to some Native American tribes, but they were considered a "junk fish" and poisoned. Faces migratory issues due to dams. European brook lamprey: Non-parasitic, doesn't eat as an adult.

Lamprey life cycle: 1) Egg 2) Ammocete (larva) with simple eyespots and no teeth. Burrows and eats algae. Termed an "ecosystem engineer" because it aerates the substrate like an earthworm. 3) Transformer (after several years). Develops eyes/teeth/kidneys over a few months. 4) Adult. Migrates to the ocean, parasitizes fish by clamping onto them, rasping with sharp tongue, and sucking their blood out. 5) Spawning. Returns to birthplace and builds a nest called a "redd". Dies after laying eggs. Lampreys feed the ecosystem with nutrients brought back from the sea.
