Thanks Connie, although I think @geomorphmark.bsky.social deserves at least some credit/blame for suggesting I try this in the first place!

Time-lapse trail cameras… not just for wildlife! πŸ“Έ

Chuffed to share this Tools of the Trade article in @natrevearthenv.bsky.social, highlighting how we can capture glacier calving to better understand rates and drivers of ice loss.

Congrats @connieharpur.bsky.social! Great to see this primer on ice-marginal lakes in Greenland published. Get in touch with me or Connie if you need access!

Glacier speed-up as a possible precursor to volcanic eruptions at Mount Veniaminof, Alaska | Journal of Glaciology | Cambridge Core Glacier speed-up as a possible precursor to volcanic eruptions at Mount Veniaminof, Alaska

A new paper led by former PhD Student Michael Martin suggesting that glacier speed-up might be an early indicator of volcanic eruptions. All funded by @leverhulme.bsky.social.

…therefore, increases in glacier velocities (as monitored by satellites) may provide advance warning of volcanic activity and eruptions. This is useful because ice-covered volcanoes are amongst the most dangerous globally and the most difficult to monitor.

We think this is likely due to higher levels of geothermal heating near volcanoes melting the base of overlying glaciers, causing them to slide faster than other glaciers. This is important because volcanoes can exhibit increased volcanic heating months ahead of an eruption…

A figure showing box plots of median glacier velocities for glaciers near a volcano (in pink) and other glaciers (in blue). Data is grouped by glacial region, and shows that the velocities of glaciers near volcanoes are typically greater than those of other glaciers in 9 of the 10 regions.

A figure showing box plots of median glacier velocities for glaciers near a volcano (in pink) and other glaciers (in blue). Data is grouped by glacial region, and shows that the velocities of glaciers near volcanoes are typically greater than those of other glaciers in 9 of the 10 regions.

When controlling for other environmental variables, we find that glaciers within 5 km of an active volcano have median velocities 46% greater than those of other glaciers and that, for glaciers near active volcanoes, velocities further increase with proximity to the volcano.

In the paper we pull together glacier, volcano and climate data for the world’s 217,000 glaciers to isolate the effect of volcano proximity on glacier flow for the period 2017-2018.

I'm pleased to announce our exciting new paper in Comms Earth & Environment: 'Proximity to active volcanoes enhances glacier velocity', in which we find glaciers located near volcanoes flow almost 50% faster than those located elsewhere. @natureportfolio.bsky.social
