Check out this time-lapse video of waves eroding an ice front from an experiment conducted in our cryogenic wave tank at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The tank is housed in a walk-in freezer, and the waves are precisely controlled. This video captures about an hour of wave erosion.

Double progress in ice-rise modeling by @clarahenry.bsky.social. First we are now able to model ice rises and surrounding ice shelves in 3D and link it with radar stratigraphy to obtain area-wide age-depth estimates ( doi.org/10.1029/2024...)

One key finding is that many pinning points are surrounded by local meteoric only, hence these buttressing relevant areas are particularly sensitive to atmospheric/oceanographic changes

Interdisciplinary collaborations can lead to really cool science.
This study led by @gmoss13.bsky.social is a great example. Here, we show how simulation-based inference helps to infer more information from radar stratigraphy than possible before: Both, surface accumulation and basal melt rates.

We obtain posterior distributions over ice accumulation and melting rates for Ekström Ice Shelf over the past hundreds of years. This allows us to make quantitative statements about the history of the atmospheric and oceanic conditions.
