Most of my original works have become long scope projects, so while I wrestle with those, I also want to make time for my shorter projects! You can expect a lot of new music posts this winter ❄️

It looks like I've entered the long term phase of writing 反省曲

Part of me wanted to finish this year so I could get a winter reading, but the music decides for itself 🙂‍↕️

With that out of the way, my pacing is going to be way longer, maybe next July it'll be done 😵‍💫

How do you all start a new composition/idea? I typically find myself improvising something at the piano, but I'm kinda looking to change up my process a bit to spice things up.

Would be curious how y'all get started!

I've been working on a traditional approach with sketching ideas down on paper - something that helps me a ton is actually visualizing my inspiration (eg. why am I writing?) - and then after I find something, I create a theme motif reflecting that and start building from there.

That's fair lol it's definitely more of a film/soundtrack thing

Piano seems to be popular in Japan's anime/video game osts too and it's my favorite thing ever (Sawano and Hayashi use piano all the time)

this too, even as a piano player it's hard not to go all out when it's a soloist, you have 88 notes

my last two piano works had lots of crazy rhythms/multiple octave jumps within a passage that made it almost impossible to play 💀

Piano is the greatest orchestral instrument for this reason
