Some of us are just trying to make sense of a tragedy that was at least partly preventable with better government action and preparedness. Saying “they voted for this” is cruel and senseless but pointing out the political negligence is necessary

5/ Jane was a beautiful person and she and the young children and many more who died deserve better than a government that cuts emergency relief resources and constantly denies the existence of destructive climate change, of which extreme flooding is a direct result, as backed by science.

4/ Yes, flash floods are by definition unexpected and disastrous. But we knew for months that Trump’s funding cuts to the National Weather Service would have devastating effects on the ability to forecast the severity of extreme weather events.

3/ But as much as we feel sadness, we also feel rage. Rage that this was allowed to happen - because it was ALLOWED TO HAPPEN - by a state and federal government that regularly minimizes the risk of climate change and slashed disaster response resources.

2/ My first instinct is to remember Jane. My childhood memories of her are that she was a warm light of a person. When my mom first came to the US, she paid for her ticket. She invited me to her camp, my first ever summer camp experience.

Today we learned that my mom’s dear friend Jane Ragsdale, a community leader and beloved longtime director of the Heart O’ the Hills summer camp for girls, was one of the at least known 27 victims of the catastrophic floods in Texas.
