This paper examined the effects of identifying the lowest 5% of performing schools in Ohio per ESSA. They found *negative* effects on attendance, graduation, and test scores. Why? More staff attrition, unclear how to improve, and did not come with more resources. www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1...

Overall, school infrastructure quality matters for student health, well-being, and learning.

Our research shows that not all students have access to safe and healthy buildings. . . but there are funding mechanisms available to solve this problem!

We find that:
πŸ”Ή Schools serving more students of color have worse building conditions across dimensions.
πŸ”Ή These disparities remain even after accounting for poverty, geography, and school type.
πŸ”Ή Property tax revenue is the biggest driver of the gap, but state building aid helps narrow the gap.
