OpenAI's VP for education recently said the company wanted to become "core infrastructure" for schools and universities. Any infrastructure, though, always depends on habituating users to its technical affordances - so I've been trying to track how it's doing that 𧡠www.nytimes.com/2025/06/07/t...

I know that Medicare/ Medicaid is Democratsβ native language & what theyβre happiest speaking but Iβd love for SOME prominent person to try the line βthey increased the debt limit by $5 trillion in order to triple size of ICE & make its detention center bigger than the whole federal prison system.β

A complicating factor here is every state administering Medicaid under a unique name. "I'm not on Medicaid, I'm on Medi-Cal / BadgerCare Plus / STAR / etc!" Many people about to discover that they are, in fact, on Medicaid.

-halal cart for $8 instead of $10
-taxing the 1%
-no cost childcare
-city-owned grocery stores
-a Department Of Community Safety for mental health programs and crisis response
-building affordable housing
-why Cuomo sucks

Yes. I am right. I am seeing how Chat GPT is ruining students critical thinking and writing skills in real time. It is not the future. It is a tool designed to render the populace helpless, to make people doubt their innate intelligence, and to foster overreliance on technology.

I was hit by a wave of hunger again today.
Suddenly, you feel as if the walls of your stomach are sticking to each other, and with it, you feel a bitterness in your throat as if its acids have reached your mouth, causing a severe headache and a sense of emptiness surrounding your brain.

I think a lot abt how marginalized people are expected to be perfect just to be treated w/ basic dignity, just to access legal protection. But democracy canβt mean rights for the respectable few. It has to mean fair and just treatment even for those seen as least deserving. Thatβs the real test.

Sanctuary is Good Public Policy
Sanctuary policies aren't just good for public safety and economicsβthey also promote justice and human rights.
In this op-ed (my first!) I argue that sanctuary matters, even amidst the anti-immigrant terror.

Ohio State cutting DEI programs shows a breathtaking fear of the truth | Opinion
Pretending racism does not exist will not stop Donald Trump's attack on higher education.
I get that we're messaging to whatever moveable conservatives are left out there and trying to outrun the targets on all of our backs. I really do. But I refuse to forget why this work matters. And I refuse to throw students of color under the bus. My op-ed in @dispatch.com:

Make arrangements with friends and family to be in touch on a daily basis, so that if something happens, people on the outside can take actions to protect you. It is crucial someone knows where you are, and that action is taken if you are taken into custody.
Be careful about any acts which may be considered a crime. Itβs a good idea to avoid activities like smoking a cigarette in the wrong placeβthe ramifications of these kinds of activities are now unpredictable. They may result in revocation of your visa. Actions which are criminal in nature, including acts of civil disobedience, will result in significant consequences.
My immigration firm sent a newsletter today in response to inquiries from clients over the last two months. They "strongly recommend against international travel", warned against even walking past political rallies, noted government reps may ask to see emails, texts + social media, and these points:

Ok sociology, what do you think are genuine breakthroughs that our field has made. Contributions that might convince skeptical but sympathetic *academics* (not the public) of the value of our field? I'll brainstorm some of mine in the thread - I treat sociology very broadly

We canβt get out of this by hiding. The only way out is actually fighting for universities, science, and public health in a way that involves convincing many other people to also fight for them.
