Black Panther 1 (1998)

US State Dept. employee Everett Ross struggles to recap the last few days with his "client".

What did you think of the nonlinear nature of the story? How about our POV character, Ross? How do you think Mephisto ties into this?

Fantastic Four #53 (May 10, 1966)

The Black Panther teams up with the FF to save Wakanda from Ulysses Klaw. It's impressive just how much of Black Panther's backstory is set up here. Everything from T'Chaka to Vibranium to Klaw. Sadly this issue skirts some pretty problematic colonialist tropes.

The success (and quality) of #SkeletonCrew is just confirming for me that people would absolutely devour a Power Pack series on Disney+. Make it happen, Feige!

John Buscema was a Marvel Comics legend. From his runs on Avengers, Fantastic Four, & Thor to re-defining Conan the Barbarian for a generation to co-authoring How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way with Stan Lee. He passed away in 2002. Today would have been his 97th birthday.

Tales to Astonish #82 (May 3, 1966)

Iron Man and Namor spend 11 pages fighting. I mean, it's Jack Kirby filling in for Gene Colon so... it GOOD fighting. But nothing much else happens.

In the B story, Hulk returns from Subterranea and saves Betty from Boomerang. That's pretty much it.

Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate. May your proteins be perfectly cooked. May your starches be mashed to your preferred consistency. I am thankful that I get to connect with so many cool people from all over the world. Thank you.

Tales of Suspense #80 (May 10, 1966)

This is the 1st time we get a story split between 2 titles. The Iron Man/Namor fight that starts here is continued in Tales to Astonish.
Also, the Red Skull gets his hands on the Cosmic Cube (which was the inspiration for the 1st Captain America MCU film).

That's fair. Don't get me wrong, Singles is an absolute banger. But I'd probably replace it with Clerks or Hackers.

Daredevil #18 (May 3, 1966)

Foggy is still trying to convince Karen that HE'S Daredevil, which brings him face to face with Melvin Potter aka The Gladiator. Foggy sets up a fake fight that turns deadly real. Romita's continues to impress on art duty. Dennis O'Neil steps in to pinch hit on writing.

I'm (clearly) a Marvel person. But I am excited for James Gunn's upcoming DC projects. Good comic book movies, regardless of company, raise the whole medium.

That being said, if you REALLY want to get me hyped, announce a project with THIS guy:

I'm a bit of a dice goblin so... Β―\_(ツ)_/Β―
And, as far as custom dice go, they were pretty reasonably priced. Four sets for less than $20.

Tales of Suspense #79 (Apr 12, 1966)

Tony Stark stumbles into the middle of the Namor/Dorma/Krang love triangle.

In the B story, we get the return of the Red Skull AND our first look at the Cosmic Cube. The setup of AIM across multiple titles is really cool & they feel like an actual threat.

The whole story arc is great. A very sweeping, psychedelic tale. The wrap up is VERY rushed. You can tell Ditko was trying to close as many doors on this story as he could before he left.

Ditko Surfer would have been... interesting. Visually, it would have been cool. Just don't let Ditko WRITE it.

Strange Tales #146 (Apr 12, 1966)

We get Ditko's final Dr. Strange tale, in which he tried to wrap up the last year of stories in 12 pages. At this point, Lee & Ditko's relationship was so strained, Dennis O'Neil stepped in to write the dialog. It's bad.

The Nick Fury story is also "meh".

Roy Thomas joined Marvel in 1965 and was the first writer that Stan Lee trusted to take over writing duties on superhero titles in 1966. His contributions include legendary runs on The Avengers and Conan the Barbarian. He served as Editor-In-Chief from 1972 to 1974.

Today is his 84th birthday.
