Comic author and artist Joanne Kwan (b.1990) died on April 3. Kwan wrote Secunda, Shifting Lanes and the graphic novels Demon House, and Erie Waters. Kwan also did freelance work, designing covers for other independent authors.

I don't know how 'normal' people feel about this, but if a book has an AI cover, then there's absolutely NO chance in hell that I'm reading it.

Have you ever read a poem that makes you want to tear the page out of the book it’s in and eat it, or is that just me?

It’s been three years. I obviously haven’t recovered.

My most humbling experience as a fantasy writer was when I thought I’d figured out the perfect names for things that couldn’t be mispronounced in a way I couldn’t predict… but then on a VC I mentioned the land of Gegenes… only to have a friend say “I thought it was guh-JEAN-is.” … Like the PANTS?!

Finished the last major edits for Act 1 of SP… two more acts to go, and it still feels surreal to be prepping for a physical release…

My other big project was more independent from my main series, and that’s kinda how I worked through it? it works for me because I mesh things together until the world/characters are a sort of… single entity.

Sometimes things blow up, sometimes you end up finding you’ve got a lifelong ride-or-die friendship that just *makes sense*

Me, too! One of the reasons I started writing these prequels was to play with the friendship between my MC Kanna and her best friend, Vahn. The first prequel I wrote for this series was actually his.

The MC of my #FirstDraftFall wip is Kanna. She’s half-feral on a good day, full out on a bad one. In the prequel, she’s trying to keep those close to her safe by obeying her sister without question, until she finds out what her sister is up to… & knows she has to stop her. #WeeknightWriters

Specific character types are sometimes more difficult for me to pin down. Usually the ones less prone to sarcasm, the forthright or stoic ones, take me longer to get a feel for. And it’s VERY frustrating if they don’t feel *right* next to other characters. #WeeknightWriters

character voice is so hard to get right! I get annoyed when mine start sounding too much alike…

Character development is my favorite part… my favorite part of that is developing them through their relationships. Romantic, platonic, familial, or even relationships with their “enemies.” Putting one char next to another also gets the bonus of a 2fer development. #WeeknightWriters

I do the side stories thing, too! It’s one of the best ways I’ve found to really dig into characters.

Can’t start without VIBES. 😂 typically, I figure out a major point in their background or at least one defining thing about them, and their base personality. Then I spin that and the story around for a while until things start to fall into place. #WeeknightWriters

I’m in between.. My SP universe was built years ago for the two MCs (Kanna & Haru) who were developed in tandem with the world. Generally, I guess it’s vibes of both: an idea for a relationship between characters, & what I want that relationship & their story to feel like. #WeeknightWriters
