My real question is how has Canada used the delay to build pathways of trade that are less reliant on the US and since the answer is “they didn’t” I would like to know why

Dear Commissioner Dufresne, I am writing to you today regarding my concerns with billionaire Elon Musk, who owns the social media platform X, and is now employed by United States President, Donald Trump as a senior advisor to the President. Since taking over X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Musk has garnered considerable power over users of the platform’s personal information. For example, we know that as of this past November 15, 2024, X now shares user data — including posts, likes, bookmarks, and reposts — with third-party platforms that may use the information to train AI models. As the CBC reported, “The change comes just a few months after X quietly shifted its privacy policy, giving itself permission to train the company's Grok chatbot on user data. But that led to an investigation by the European Union's privacy regulator, which ended with X agreeing to stop collecting user data from that region for the purpose of training Grok.” Furthermore, Mr. Musk has the ability to manipulate X’s algorithms to influence users in their political decisions. He openly donated millions of dollars to Conservative candidates around the world and has been accused of using his platform X to manipulate algorithms to amplify and favour candidates he prefers. He has recently endorsed the Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and has supported calls for Canada to become the 51st State of the United States. This could lead to political interference in Canada and resulted in my colleague requesting an investigation from the Commissioner of Elections.

There is no transparency from X, and we do not know exactly what information is being used and for what purpose. This raises significant questions on Canadians’ confidential information and what it is being used for. Moreover, we should be looking at the allowance of this app on Canadian parliamentarians devices – potentially raising national security concerns. Parliament has already banned Parliamentarians from using such apps a TikTok and DeepSeek from all devices for privacy and security reasons. It is time to investigate X and reconsider what impacts having this app could pose to Canadians, Parliament, and our national security. Therefore, I am respectfully asking you to investigate the impacts of having X on government devices with regard to our national security and information, and also whether having X could potentially put Canadians’ personal information in jeopardy.
