I've decided that as annoying as it is to see a blocked quote post, I like quote post detaching. Quote dunks are a key driver of using outrage for engagement, and nerfing them seems worth accepting some inconvenience for.

I once naively thought that since child mortality was so much higher back in the day people would be inured to it. But reading the Stoic philosophers (Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius in particular) made it apparent: no, it was experienced as fully devastating, it took immense fortitude just to go on.

The humans of the distant past were broken, battered survivors living with horrific sorrows and regrets.

Many did outstanding things regardless, but it was never pretty.

To state the obvious: when a state builds hospitals, it makes choices regarding how to build them and how to run them, and these choices represent the state’s vision of what a hospital must be like. We know in India what that vision looks like, state to state. But when others — private persons — build and run hospitals, they are motivated by profit, by their own constraints, and by their sensibilities about how a hospital must be built and run. These motivations are necessarily personal, necessarily individual, and therefore, necessarily undemocratic. The reality of what the private person’s hospital *is* will deviate from the state’s vision of what a hospital *should be*. This is the world as it should be. There is far too much of a tendency in India for the state to come in and tell hospitals how they should make operational decisions. Any coherent attempt at regulating hospitals should *begin* by dispensing with this tendency.
