Zowel een recente studie naar het openzetten van de deur door de VVD in 2023 (zie plaatje onder) als reeksen eerdere studies in 15 landen sinds 1944 (zie m'n boek uit 2018).

Imiteren zonder isoleren: slecht plan.

Focus op defensie duwt radicaal-rechts in het defensief Mainstreampartijen claimen defensie als nieuw thema, terwijl radicaal-rechts worstelt met een verdeeld narratief.

Wilders laat regering vallen: PVV wil focus terug op migratie. Radicaal-rechts blijft vote-seeking, ook in regering & bij machtsdeelname. Compromissen lastig, zeker in gepolitiee crisistijd met nadruk op ongunstige thema’s als defensie. Ik schreef er al over in Sampol

There is also a book forthcoming on the ramification of hate speech prosecution by @joostvanspanje.bsky.social & Rachid Azrout with this and more evidence in there based on this project.

That said, different types of prosecution (e.g. for misappropriation as in the case of Marine Le Pen) may not trigger the same dynamics & have different electoral ramifications. Backlash effects might be context-dependent and the reason for conviction might matter.

A study by Lisanne Wichgers, @joostvanspanje.bsky.social & myself in IJPP examined framing of (hate speech) prosecution by Wilders in the Netherlands, highlighting that the framing of prosecution as a ‘political process’ was also already prevalent in NL 👇
