Sparrowhawks are more common, especially in Essex. There's a book you might be interested in, based in the area around Little Baddow & Maldon? See below. Your local library can get it for you. A great read.

That looks like a fabulous plot. When I got mine, after a 3 year wait, it looked more like grassland than a veggie plot. It took me ages to strip the grass off it & put it to one side to decompose, then dig it.

Spotted this Shaggy Inkcap (Coprinus comatus) on my walk yesterday. Edible, too, although short-lived. #fungi

Very wet & muddy underfoot on our 10Β½ mile walk yesterday, but the December light was beautiful with a Cold Moon keeping us company. Fabulous way to spend a day.

We dice up our squash into cubes & add to onions, peppers, tin baked beans, protein of choice, & value spaghetti (broken into 1Β½" pieces), or rice, with Β½ jar of curry (or other) sauce. A delicious low-budget meal.

I love runner beans. I've been growing from my own seeds for well over a decade. I plant 2 beans per cane, 10 canes per row, x2 rows angled towards each other, with a supporting bar between them . I use wigwams for climbing french beans.

I am really pleased with my first 10k walk 6 weeks after my back operation, carrying a front cross body rucksack chest bag. Beautiful day. Loving the autumnal colours & the sunshine. Illness resets your priorities. Good health is your greatest asset.

I'm not a great fan of wooden ladder stiles. I nearly came a cropper on one on the Pennine Way once. I slipped & ended upside with one leg firmly stuck at the top. How I didn't break my leg was a mystery.

Don't forget to recommend a walk around the allotment to see what grows well & what doesn't. Oh & crop rotation.

Selling it in specially labelled souvenir bags with a suitable sticker about sustainability of the site would give a revenue stream possibly 10s of 1,000s times more than selling it to the building trade? Never look a gift horse in the mouth.

Have you ever thought of selling small bags of pumice to visitors? A simple & easy way to raise funds for future work & a beautiful souvenir for people coming to see your wonderful site?

It's a bit wintry weatherwise today, so I decided to pick the last remaining peppers in the garden rather than lose them to the coming cold weather. Not too shabby a harvest? Added to my allotment grown butternut/pumpkin, with onions & and rice, they will be quite delicious.

It tipped it down when we were there a few weeks ago, so our walking was limited. I did collect some walnut windfall from the path outside the YH, though. Happy memories of Malham. I first met Tom Stephenson there several decades ago.
