I have been watching NASCAR for 30 years. I am well aware they were conservative in politics, but now it feels like they are trying to exercise the Jimmy Johnson and Jeff Gordon years.

And they wonder why people are not coming to races or watching races on TV. I can watch Indy or Formula One that has the drama and excitement without the sellout to right-wing politics.

It is becoming clear to me that some people on the left side of politics have not done a cross-country road trip in a long time. Maybe they should do that and not talk, but listen and observe what they see. Maybe then they will have a clear vision on what the future holds.

I decided to see what my college alumni group is up to to avoid the news. The Valentine's Day post has pictures of cute couples who met in college. There is a picture of one of my high school classmates who met in high school and her husband didn't go to my college. Seriously, why lie over that?

I am also studying my Native ancestors tactics on survival and re-learning to observe and listen to find the best path forward. I am also understanding how they made some difficult choices in the face of long odds to survive.

I re-read my notes from interviewing my grandfather about the Nazi occupation of Denmark. I am re-learning it is all about finding allies, not being showy, and acting as a group together.

When are people going to understand that the normal playbook is gone? Right now we are going to have to build this plane as we figure out how to fly it.

I get it. I woke up to a water leak. There must be something in the air.

The last time my tribe was told to give up its sovereignty for state citizenship we said no thanks and was forcibly removed to Oklahoma....

I wouldn't have gotten far if my professors said no. The biggest one was my stats professor who drugged me to get tested because I was struggling in her class to find out I had a mild form of dyslexia. She has every right to fail me but didn't because dare I say she cared. 3/3

The government by no means is perfect, but when your job is a service you learn quickly that you need to stretch what is possible. This is a concept that I am beginning to wonder if my academic colleagues understand. 2/

As someone who works in government and who started doing professional organization service was going to change things, this thread hits close to home. The lack of a willingness to try something new or to attempt to go above and beyond was jarring with my academic colleagues. 1/

My dad's idea of what time dinner is going to be ready and mind are two very different things.

In the US, the federal agency will review a report and is required by law to send it out to the state and all tribes that have ancestral territorial interests in the area the project is located for their review. It is mostly a simple review, but can be an intense review process.

Especially because the consultation review process is much more rigorous than peer review.

It is a little more complicated than just poor leadership.

Not really. We have the Secretary of Interior Standards, individual state standards, and an organization that is a poor attempt at self-governance.

I am all for archaeology doing a bit of a transition to become more professional. Archaeology might be taken more seriously if we became more professional.

How about we just call it archaeology? I am sick and tired of being seen as not a full blown archaeologist by my academic peers because I work in cultural resource management specifically the complaince/regulatory side in the US.
