Three trench sections, annotated based on stratigraphic layers separated by period/culture.
NEW Central to the origins of rice agriculture, paddy fields underpinned the formation of complex societies in East Asia.
Stratigraphy reveals the evolution of the earliest paddy fields, showing how agricultural societies in eastern China developed.

The Museum's Curator of World Archaeology places a pit within the display case. Within the case are numerous pots shaped like animals or birds.
One of our displays has had a makeover! Previously a visible storage case - now, thanks to our Archaeology Collections and Workshop teams, it explores the impact of the natural world on Moche pottery and brings you face to face with portraits of individuals from this ancient Andean civilisation.

Experimental archaeology involves making replica tools and using them (butchery, woodworking) to study microscopic use-wear patterns. Itβs how we move from guessing to knowing. π¬

My photo shows a Roman bronze dragonβs head from a military standard carried by Roman cavalry. The head is elongated with open jaws. The top and bottom jaws are lined with sharp triangular teeth. The top of the snout has diagonal ridges. It has a single round eye socket. The rear of the head and neck is textured with scales. At the top of the head there is a short, jagged, fin-like, upright crest. The bronze surface is weathered with greenish and gold patches. It is mounted on a dark stand in a museum display case.
Roman bronze dragonβs head standard, AD 190-260.
Originally mounted on a pole, with a long fabric tube attached to the back of the head. When charging on horseback, the wind inflated the tube and the dragon shrieked!

10.11.2025 14:35 β π 13 π 2 π¬ 2 π 0The image shows detail from a floor mosaic of a brown mouse on a pale background facing left with its nose close to half a walnut in its shell. The mouse has a long thin tail stretched out behind. The mosaicist has used a mix of lighter and darker brown tiles for the mouseβs body to hint at fur. The walnut is created with warmer light and dark brown tiles. Slightly darker background tiles have been used beneath the mouse and walnut to create subtle shadows
Delightful detail from the Roman βunswept floorβ mosaic by Heraclitus, showing a mouse nibbling a walnut.
Superb use of darker tiles for subtle shadow effect!

An ancient Roman coin with nicks missing around the edge and the profile of a man in the centre.
Have you ever heard of the emperor Domitianus?
This remarkable coin discovered on farmland near Chalgrove in 2003 provides proof that a man named Domitianus claimed to be emperor in the early 270s CE. It was fused in a mass of nearly five thousand coins within a partially intact Roman jar.
