Role of ABA in regulation of heading in rice. ABA can promote and delay heading time in rice. ABA-dependent transcription factor, OsbZIP23, positively regulates homologs of FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT), Heading date 3a (Hd3a) and RICE FLOWERING LOCUS T1 (RFT1). Furthermore, ABA-dependent kinase, STRESS-ACTIVATED PROTEIN KINASE10 (SAPK10), phosphorylates FLOWERING LOCUS D1 (OsFD1) and promotes formation of Flowering Activation Complex (FAC) built of OsFD1, 14-3-3 proteins and Hd3a. On the other side, ABA can delay heading date. ABA-dependent kinase, SAPK8, phosphorylates ABRE BINDING FACTOR (OsABF1), what in turn represses expression of heading regulators, Early heading date1 (OsEhd1) and OsEhd2. Furthermore, ABA-dependent transcription factors, ABA-RESPONSIVE ELEMENT BINDING PROTEIN 1 (OsAREB1) and ABA RESPONSIVE ELEMENT (ABRE)-BINDING FACTOR8 (OSBZ8), directly activate expression of gene encoding negative regulator of heading, RICE CENTRORADIALIS 1 (OsRCN1). Moreover, OsbZIP23, can interact with Hd3a/Flowering Locus T-like (OsFTL1)/RFT1. It promotes formation of Flowering Repressing Complex (FRC) consisted of OsbZIP23, 14-3-3 proteins and Hd3a/OsFTL1/RFT1 what in turn inhibits heading. Figure was created in BioRender
