I went to nearly 100 appointments in 14 months during my first diagnosis. I’ve probably been to like… 40-50 this last year. Wild times.

The thing about cancer is that it threatens your time on earth, which sucks... but to treat it and recover, it also takes a loooong time.

Does cancer turn out not to be fine some of the time?!

Toxic positivity is so weird. It doesn't have to be polarized. Like... we can acknowledge that it sucks and is unfair, and that we're going to do the best we can while building in downside and diversions to our plan.

Alternatively, "you got this!", or "Nah, you're gonna be fine!" 🙄

I took today as a 'mental health day'... except I'm self-employed, so I don't need to declare that.

Naturally, on my day off from growing a cancer patient advocacy non-profit and/or creating content about it, I've mostly just watched melanoma treatment conferences.

I agree with this - I essentially trust my oncologist implicitly, but I get a second opinion (at least) about everything, because my trust is in his intent and baseline knowledge, and not that he gets it right every time.

Trust is one of the most important things for cancer patients to establish in treatment. I have an awesome oncologist and support team, but I know that's not universal.

If you don't trust your oncologist fully, where do you go for supplemental advice?

2) My case is an example of 'great' but not 'best' case scenarios. I've gotten a hyper-aggressive, historically deadly disease and treated it 3 times. Someone out there is being diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma as I type this...

I'm 2 months into remission from stage 4 cancer today.

This is the third time I can say that phrase; I'm getting pretty good at this whole 'beating' cancer thing.

I love documenting milestones like this for multiple reasons:

1) Stage 4 melanoma would have put me in the dirt many times... (1/2)

Oh, man... I'm a binge eater for sweets, and I do it somewhat often. Luckily my caloric maintenance hovers around 3k-3500 depending on what I'm doing, so I can get away with some shenanigans 😬

Or in-diagnosis! During my first treatment, I had to get labs every week. I mostly had the same phlebotomist to draw at the clinic. One week, she was training a new hire, and said “his results are ONC, which means he has cancer.”

I pretended to have just learned I had cancer. They were mortified 😂
