When two hijacked jetliners struck the World Trade Center, Rudolph Giuliani became the face of a city struggling with tragedy. No one has stepped into that role during the LA fires. Given the way things are set up here, no on really could. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/19/u...

L.A. Wildfires Ramp Up Difficulty of Hosting 2028 Olympics Rebuilding areas ravaged by wildfires will present a daunting challenge, but the flip side could be the “compelling image of a city emerging from the ashes.”

Staging the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028 - for all its promise to bring LA international attention -- was always going to be hard. But the fires are what one city leader called the "nightmare scenario" as preparations begin. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/13/u...

A Legacy From Carter That Democrats Would Prefer to Escape For decades, Republicans have reveled in invoking Jimmy Carter’s name to deride Democrats as weak — mockery that has influenced the way Democrats present themselves to voters.

For all his accomplishments, Jimmy Carter also had a political legacy that his Democratic successors have tried to escape for 50 years. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/08/u...

The ‘Landslide’ That Wasn’t: Trump and Allies Pump Up His Narrow Victory The latest vote count shows that Donald J. Trump won the popular vote by one of the smallest margins since the 19th century. But Mr. Trump claims a “powerful mandate.”

James Carville predicted that Trump would, if elected, claim mandate —this great @peterbakernyt.bsky.social story examines and debunks the claim - during a pre election Q&A w me in LA. He said Harris should use that in closing argument to energize voters .

Very deliberately did not say landslide because it was nothing close to that. But losing all seven swing states, even by small margins, and the popular vote, is decisive. There is no ambivalence to that. That is why the reaction from Dems this time is so different from 2016, IMO
