In conversation with our Head of English - Ark Curriculum+ Meet Michlyn, our new Head of Subject for English Secondary, as she shares her vision for the future of English teaching and how we can inspire the next generation.

It’s been 5 months since I started my role as Head of English Secondary at Ark Curriculum Plus and what a busy time it’s been! Here are my thoughts on my vision for the English Mastery programme and the teaching of English in general. www.arkcurriculumplus.org.uk/blog/in-conv...

The big day is tomorrow! Really looking forward to our #ACPConference25. In particular, can’t wait to hear from Becky Fisher and Matt Carnaby @englishassociation.bsky.social talk about curriculum and assessment reform!

It is exciting to continue to support our community of teachers to move oracy more centrally into the experience of all young people in their journey through English education.

Not only are we fostering confident speakers and listeners, but our spoken language curriculum creates a foundational base to develop better writers and critical readers.

Oracy is front and centre of English Mastery, and the holistic nature of our curriculum means that spoken language enhances other aspects of the English discipline.

Speaking up: The future of oracy in English Education and why it matters We often hear that in today's world, communication is power. But how well are communication skills and oracy really being taught in our classrooms?

Read my blog here where I summarise the key findings and share how English Mastery supports the recommendations from this key report. www.arkcurriculumplus.org.uk/news-events/...

It was great to read the recent report from the Oracy Commission. The report raises some big questions about the way we teach oracy in schools. 🧡

As always, it was a privilege to run some training at Ark Network Day. A room full of 44 teachers was a squeeze but full of great conversations, thoughtful questions and reflections! A great way to end the half term. Thank you to Ark Walworth for hosting the day!

Curriculum review may 'have to take things out' says chair Professor Becky Francis acknowledges complaints of a 'very overstuffed curriculum'

πŸ—„οΈ 'I’m very clear that if we’re putting things in, we also need to find things to take out, and that’s often much more controversial, but that is a key principle there'

It reminded how lucky I am as a curriculum specialist to have space to open worlds for students through literature and to discuss the issues that really matter.❀️

Fiction allows us to grasp important and sensitive subjects from multiple angles–a freedom we are steadily losing in the age of social media and unfeeling algorithms.”

β€œthere is no better space than literature, especially the novel as a literary genre, within which to freely explore the most complex issues of our time with nuance, depth, care and empathy…
