DEATH OF THE AUTHOR by Nnedi Okorafor.
I just finished this and love it. Both straightforward lit fic and a sci-fi mindfuck. Swaps back and forth between an author and the book she writes. The two stories start blending together. The narration was also lovely in the audiobook.
Get a copy of The Deep Dark for yourself or as a gift. You will not regret it. I adore that book. Gorgeous tale about finding support and learning to live with your weird smol serpentine fox demon

Open AI loses copyright case in Germany.
Judge Elke Schwager summarized the case saying that if you want to build something and need components, "then you purchase them and do not use the property of others."
and these decisions are just as influenced by what is seen as endemic or extraordinary for a given 'era' as by how that work still resonates.
14.11.2025 16:41 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I agree with a lot of what you wrote abt. There are people who decide on reading lists and canonization though. So there sort of is an academic, if not necessarily wise cabal of people with lots of influence on what has stood/will stand the test of time

Oh, and lest I forget generational trauma as a core theme ๐. I think that's gonna resonate real well with gen alpha.
11.11.2025 16:43 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0A hardback copy of ND Stevenson's "Scarlet Morning" on top of a low windowsill shelf. The cover shows two kids in the foreground engulfed in fog. In the background looms a scarlet sun. In the middleground the silhouette of a sailing ship promises adventure. The shelf itself is filled with a wild assortement of nonfiction and fiction, reminding me once again that I need to build some new shelves. On the windowsill behind the shelf a little plastic T-Rex peeks over the line of books in front of her.
One of the best middle grade novels I've read as an adult. Now granted, I don't read that much middle grade fiction (apparently I should change that -- this was fun), but I can just imagine a kid falling in love with reading & books as physical media ...

Scarlet Morning looks & feels like a real labor of love (+ Stevenson's character work has always been amazing) and I'm so excited for Liu to capture my imagination again
It's ok that there are books I don't get. That doesn't make them 'pretentious' and it doesn't mean I'm dumb. Anti-intellectualism can suck it. In its current online form it's nothing but a bunch of people insecure in their own stupidity.
