Ive enjoyed other defunct land videos, i was mostly trying to articulate why i felt this most recent one was so lackluster.

I said in another conversation moment that I don't feel like they are particularly good as documentaries either. Even documentaries are more than just the dry recitation of facts at you for hours on end.

Honestly, if hitting a friend in the boob is the most defining moment of 2026 for me, then it sounds like it's gonna be a pretty chill year.

Im told that there *is* a payoff, an ultimate message of the video, but if that is entirely contained in the last half hour of the video then what was the rest of the video for? How much of what is being said is actually necessary context for the point he wants to make?

Trying to overcome something and then doing it, or failing to do it, naturally creates an arc.

At the end of the day, that is what I feel is missing from the video; direction. It doesnt feel like the hours of history being told to us is building *towards* something.

I think this is why some of the other Defunctland videos I've watched didnt suffer from this problem (or at least not to the same degree). if youre talking about theme park designers trying to overcome some technical or logistical challenge it naturally creates a narrative-like conflict.

A documentary about lions for example wont just say facts about lions at you for two hours. it might frame itself as following the life of a lion, giving information about the animal and how it interacts with the world around it as it comes up. you get invested in the story of lions, or a lion.

I think where that analogy falls apart is that, at least in many of the documentaries I have watched, they still try and imbue the documentation with a sense of narrative flow. You aren't just learning facts about the subject, you are in a sense being told a story that teaches you about it.

and its nto about the length have nothing against long videos. The drawing I posted this morning contained a reference to Jan Misali's two hour video analyzing what does and doesnt count as a Super Mario game, and I love to watch long videos from other youtubers as well.

I think I sort of lost my patience with this kind of content when I got into the Quinton Reviews videos regarding iCarly and its related shows. It promised analysis and/or reviews, but was largely just hours and hours of recapping the plots of the episodes in order of release.

that pattern is present in a lot of other videos, even other defunctland videos, but it wears a lot thinner when the video is so long. it probably doesnt help as well that some of the animatronic related stuff he touched on already and in greater detail in that dedicated video.

Maybe it changes at some point, but the first hour thus far has been nothing but a pretty dry chronological retelling of the history of computers being used in disney theme parks, and very little else. a long string of "and then they did this." over and over.

I started watching the new defunctland video. I am an hour into it, and I think it is really capturing the biggest issue I have with a lot of long form video essays that cover various types of media: a lack of any substantive commentary. Like, You dont really get his thoughts on anything.

You see, the reason this needs so many signal wires is that the engineers thought it would be a great idea to do the signal wires for 12 heaters in a single cable. Each heater is technically only using 3 or so lines.

I feel like the gameplay loops of OSRS fall somewhere between meditative and self destructive. It feels nice when I'm in a bad headspace that I can chop yew logs for 10 hours while watching YouTube.

On the other hand, like, that's bad.

That's not healthy behavior.

I say this as someone who has played the game for thousands of hours across multiple accounts and never actually accomplished anything of note. I've never gotten a 99, I've never gotten a quest cape, I've never even gotten a fire cape.

I have spent hundreds of hours fishing lobsters though.
