It is sad, but there are some very smart people I have been working with that are helping to restore these ecosystems.

It’s thought to be a combination of warming seas which affects the plant and then also allows specific predatory herbivores (urchins) to move further south because of warming waters and they then eat the giant kelp. So it’s a double whammy unfortunately.

Over 95% has been lost. Possibly 98%. It’s really sad because it’s such an important part of the inshore ecosystem.

🌊 Victoria’s once-thriving giant kelp forests are nearly gone—an entire ecosystem lost. But on the west coast near the Otways, we found a rare patch still standing.

Ever heard of a weedy seadragon? These funky little guys look like floating bits of seaweed, but they’re actually relatives of seahorses! They’re pros at blending into kelp forests down in southern Australia.

This is extraordinary behaviour of this smooth ray. Expelling its intestines violently to help get rid of anything it cannot pass. I shot this in Tasmania this year and we think it’s the first known documentation of this species doing this behaviour. Manta rays are known to do this. #marinelife
