Regardless of the cost, even if it were billions and billions of dollars, the fact that it’s possible is a marked difference over the Platforms. as the user you have choice. You have North sky, black sky, Zepplin. the composability is the affodance of the protocol.

Exactly that is the promise and delivery of having a robust protocol over most traditional applications on the web.

It is indeed stored on their PDS and the app view retrieve this information. Then displays it. In the post there is a playback of the data retrieved and that is configurable see: `RELAY_EVENT_PLAYBACK_TTL`.

Really the difference is just that you are hosting a lot more people using your service. You could instead only crawl a limited set of people that you decide in advance. This would close the cost gap between the two protocols. But it also wouldn't be equivalent to hosting a true global view of bsky

My Matrix server in comparison costed 5 dollars per month on Digital Ocean.

Eh this has no storage which would start costing quite immense amounts. And then there's the fact you want to have this accessible to more people. Say you wanted to host this on upcloud. They offer about 30€ per month hosting 100gb (10hr worth of history in ATproto it gets worse as more people join)

Yes I suppose. In comparison to say Matrix or Mastadon though where you run your own client and almost anyone can self host a view it is closer to something centralised.

This is really cool β€” initial version of a page featuring pop culture related Leaflet posts!

Got some ideas cooking w/ CJ about how this could tie in w/ future Leaflet tagging functionality for nicer discoverability…maybe other integration down the line too e.g. to mark a blog post as a review :)

Are you sure there was such a time? Transformers was a whole show dedicated selling toys. Giant ad. And so we're many shows of the past.

The grocery store is a 15 minute drive down the local stroad dividing your single family home cul de sac neighborhood and the car focused strip mall the grocery store is in. A child would die 45 times before they could buy milk.

Hope that helps Atlantic

This is spot on. The eradication of third places of public domain has happened gradually and stealthily. We now come to realise that the odd undeveloped field that you would find within a city block actually had its significance when it was serving as makeshift playground etc.

The last one is kind of contestable. Users are quite reliant on whoever is running the appview and relay. Costs are too high for that to be realistic for the average person to self host.

B8d you missed an opportunity to argue for free network transfer costs. Even Hetzner doesn't have those prices.
